Truss: Rajmanova R

1. A truss is a structure made of bars joined together at joints, while a frame can experience both axial and shear forces from loads applied to its members. 2. A perfect frame has just enough members to remain in equilibrium under loads without changing shape, while an imperfect frame has either fewer or more members than the equation n=2j-3, making it deficient or redundant. 3. Truss analysis uses the method of joints and method of sections to determine member forces by applying equilibrium conditions at each joint or when cutting through members.

frame
• Definition: a structure made up of several bar(
or members)riveted or welded together
• Perfect frame: A perfect frame may be defined
as that one which is made up of members just
sufficient to keep the frame in equilibrium,
when loaded, without any change in the
shape.
Imperfect frame
• An Imperfect frame is one which does not satisfies the
relation between the numbers of members and number of
joints given by the equation n = 2j – 3. This means that
number of member in an imperfect frame will be either
more or less than (2j-3) It may be a deficient frame or a
redundant frame.
• Deficient Frame : If the numbers of member in a frame are
less than (2j-3), then the frame is known as deficient frame.
• Redundant Frame:  If the numbers of member in a frame
are more than (2j-3), then the frame is known as
redundant frame.
Difference between truss and frame

• Truss : load applied at joints ,not

members( axial only )(pin joint)
• Frame : load applied at members( shear ,
axial , bending )( fixed joint)
analysis
• Step 1: determine the reaction forces by
equilibrium condition (assuming external load
and reactions are in equilibrium)
• Then find the unknown forces( tension and
compression) by two methods
– 1. method of joints
– 2. method of section
Method of joints
• 1. equilibrium of every joint is considered. this
means the sum of all the vertical forces as well
as the horizontal forces acting on the joint is
equated to zero
• 2.The joint should be selected in such a way
that at any time there are only two members,
in which force are unknown
Method of sections
• 1. used whenever only few forces members
are required to be found
• 2.a section line is passed through the
members, in which forces are to be
determined
• 3. that section line doesn’t passes through 3
unknown force members.
