Smart Bin Implementation For Smart Cities: Presentation

This document presents a smart bin system for waste management in smart cities. It discusses literature on smart waste management systems using IoT. The proposed system uses solar power, ultrasonic sensors, a microcontroller, and GSM module to detect when bins are full and alert waste collection. Separate bins are used for biodegradable and non-biodegradable waste. The system aims to reduce overflowing bins, collection times and costs through real-time monitoring. It also promotes cleaner communities and a greener environment through reduced fuel use.

“Smart bin Implementation for Smart Cities”

Presented by
Under the Guidance of
Literature survey
 A lot of research has been done in order to provide the world a smart waste management
system with growing rate of urbanisation.
 Research done by Mustafa M.R and Ku Azir of University of Malaysia ,was on
monitoring the level of waste in real time and alerting when ever the bin is full based on
the type of garbage.
 Similar work by Parkash,Prabu demonstrated the Iot based smart bin.
 From Trash to Treasure The Thermochemical Conversion of Garbage into Biofuel in
Libya, a research paper by Mohamed Misbah , showed the methodology to convert
municipal solid waste into clean fuels and renewable chemicals.
 Recycling - An environmentally friendly and income generating activity towards
sustainable solid waste management, Case study by Mengiseny Kasevagi, gives
recommendations for improved recycling activity so as to make it an important means of
reducing the overall volume of waste materials to be transported and deposited in the
dump site and at the same time provide a potential opportunity for employment for
unskilled workers.
Introduction

 In past few decades there is a rapid growth

in the rate of urbanization and thus there is
a need of sustainable urban development
plans.
 Now using new age technology and
strategic approach, the concept of smart
cities is coming up all around the world.
 A smart city is incomplete without a smart
waste management system.
 This Presentation describes the application
of our model of “Smart Bin” in managing
the waste collection system of an entire
city.
Problem statement

 As the world is in a stage of up gradation, there is one striking

problem i.e. dealing with Garbage.
 In our daily life, we see the pictures of garbage bins being
overfull and all the garbage spills out. This leads to the number
of diseases as large number of insects and mosquitoes breed on
it.
Objective

 A system has to be build which can eradicate this problem of waste

management or at least reduce it to the minimum level.
 And so that the waste dispatched would be proper only if the dustbins are
placed well and collected well.
 The prime need of a smart lifestyle begins with cleanliness and cleanliness
begins with dustbin.

Methodology
 The model basically consists of two bins. One bin is only used to dump the
biodegradable waste and the other is used for non-biodegradable waste.
 The mechanism is based on the principle in which solar energy is utilised through a
solar panel which intern charges 12v battery and serves the requirements.
 This Bin Works on PIC16F73 microcontroller, HC-SR04 ultrasonic sensor, SIM900A GSM
module, IC7805 voltage regulator, resister, capacitor and a crystal oscillator, dc motor.
 The ultrasonic sensor used here has two pins: Trigger and Echo, which are used for
calculating the distance of the object by generating sound waves and thus calculating the
time duration of the echo that is generated.
 The calculated time can be computed through the following equation into the distance(cm)
unit.
D = {(t*v)/2}*100 (1)
where ‘D’ as the distance in cm measured by the ultrasonic sensor, ‘t’ is the time taken by
the sound wave to echo back to the receiver in seconds, ‘v’ is the velocity of sound wave.
 One of the bin consists of two container 1and 2. An Ultra-Sonic sensor1 is
installed in the input container at a certain point above which the addition of waste
materials triggers the Ultra-Sonic sensor 1 and actuates the controller which
results in motor operation i.e. the DC motor connected to crushers ,crushes the
biodegradable materials . Once crushing is done the crushed waste drops down to
the output container. Second Ultra-Sonic sensor is installed at a certain point in the
output container, when the crushed particles crosses this level then Ultra-Sonic
sensor is triggered and actuates the controller and this results in sending the
information that the bin is full to the concerned department through the GSM kit
installed in module.
In bin-2 another third Ultra-Sonic sensor is installed at a certain point in the
container, above which the Ultra Sonic sensor is triggered and actuates the
controller and this results in sending the information that the bin is full to the
concerned department through the GSM kit installed in module

Possible outcomes
 Dustbin is an essential part of the cleanliness mission and thus need to be looked after
well. Adding a bit of smartness to our dustbins will solve most of our problems and the
smart-bin has a lot of advantages.
 By use of this methodology ,overflowing of dustbins along roadsides and localities as
smart bins are managed at real time.
 The Circuit in Dust bin Uses Dc energy Stored in Photovoltaic Cells through Solar
Panels which is Renewable and Most Abundantly found in nature
  The filling and cleaning time of smart bin will also be reduced thus making empty and
clean dustbins available to common people.
  Using the prediction and route algorithm it will smartly find the shortest route thus
reducing the workforce, the number of trucks required to clean, the amount of fuel
consumed by trucks and thus can save a large amount of tax payer’s money as well.
 It also leads to create clean as well as green environment, as it will reduce the fuel
consumption and in turn reducing the pollution in the air. As it is being said that the
technology which goes parallel with environment is the need of an hour. Our project is a
step towards such green technology.
Applications
 Controllable life cycle of waste.
 Better public image in waste management.
 Cleaner community to live.
 Low labour and fuel cost.
 Real time monitoring and communication
assistance.
Summary
Urbanization is at its rapid growth stage around the world as more number of people
desire to live in the city lights with more opportunities for growth and success. Cities
are expanding like never before to accommodate this growth and in this process the
concept of smart cities came into action. The parameters like cleanliness and hygiene
are the topic of concern in these smart cities and concrete measures should be taken for
that. Also, the growth should go hand in hand with the green environment and research
should be further done on such technology.

Our work is a small but efficient step towards cleanliness and I believe that this
presentation would encourage people to do good work on the similar topics.
