Presentation Multiplexing

This presentation introduces multiplexing, which allows the simultaneous transmission of multiple signals across a single data link. It discusses the history of multiplexing in telegraphy and telephony. The presentation also outlines the importance of multiplexing for applications like telephone systems that involve a large number of users. It describes the main types of multiplexing as frequency division multiplexing (FDM) and time division multiplexing (TDM). FDM divides the carrier bandwidth into logical channels allocated to different frequency ranges, while TDM divides the shared channel among users through time slots. The presentation explains when FDM and TDM are typically used based on whether the system involves analog broadband signals or digital baseband signals.

WHAT IS MULTIPLEXING?

 Multiplexing is a set of techniques that allows the simultaneous

transmission of multiple signals across single data link.

 A reverse process, known as Demultiplexing, extracts the original

channels on the receiver end.

 Multiplexing is done using a device called Multiplexer(MUX) that

combines ‘n’ input channels to generate one output line i.e. (many
to one).

 At receiving end a device called Demultiplexer(DEMUX) is used to

separate signals into its component signals i.e.(one to many) . 4
HISTORY

 Multiplexing originated in telegraphy in the

1870s, and is now widely applied in
communications.

 In telephony, George Owen Squier is credited

with the development of telephone carrier
multiplexing in 1910. It was his biggest
contribution for which he was elected to
the National Academy of Science  in 1919,

Major General, George Owen

Squier
Chief Signal Officer, U.S.
Army
5
WHY WE NEED MULTIPLEXING?

In applications like Telephone

System large number of users are
involved. Practically, it would be
very complex & expensive to use
separate wire for each of the
subscriber to other subscriber.

Advantages Of Multiplexing
 More than one signals can be sent over single medium or communication
link.

 Effective use of Bandwidth of medium

TYPES OF MULTIPLEXING

7
FREQUENCY DIVISION MULTIPLEXING (FDM)

FDM is an analog technology. FDM divides the spectrum or carrier

bandwidth in logical channels and allocates one user to each channel. Each
user can use the channel frequency independently and has exclusive access
of it. All channels are divided such a way that they do not overlap with each
other.

FREQUENCY DIVISION MULTIPLEXING
(FDM)

In FDM all users use the common channel

User 1 at the same time (For Full Time) but they
User 2 are allotted different frequencies to prevent
any kind of signal interference.
User 3 So, Bandwidth(BW) is divided among the
users, not time
User 4

9
TIME DIVISION MULTIPLEXING

TDM is applied primarily on digital signals but can be applied on analog

signals as well. In TDM the shared channel is divided among its user by
means of time slot. Each user can transmit data within the provided time slot
only..

TIME DIVISION MULTIPLEXING (TDM)

Frequency
In TDM, the complete channel
bandwidth (BW) is allotted to one
user for a fixed time slot. It means
each user use the full
bandwidth(BW) available but for a

fixed time slot( it’s own time slot.

So the division is in time, not
frequency.

WHEN DO WE USE FDM & TDM?

Broadband signal deals with analog signals which are in the form of
optical or RF waves. Broadband allows multiple transmissions at the
same time . They can share one channel by using different frequency
range.

Thus, FDM is used in the broadband system.

13
Example: AM/FM Radio, Walkie-Talkie,1st generation Cellular
phone, Television Broadcasting.
WHEN DO WE USE FDM & TDM?

Baseband signal deals with digital signals. Baseband signal

can transmit one signal at a time. Digital signal occupies the
entire bandwidth which means baseband system requires an
exclusive use of the channel’s capacity. When an user use the
channel no one else can use the same channel at the same
time.

Example : Ethernet

TDM & Statistical TDM is used in Baseband System.
