Beam To Beam and Column Connection

The document describes the design of a bolted beam-to-beam connection. An end reaction of 385 kN is transmitted from one beam to another. 20mm diameter grade 4.6 bolts are selected. For the beam web connection, 8 bolts in double shear are needed, with a design strength of 53.6 kN per bolt. For the beam flange connection, 9 bolts in single shear are required, with each bolt having a design strength of 45.27 kN. Framing angles are also specified to complete the connection.

Problem
An ISLB 300 @ 369.8 N/m transmits an end reaction of 385 kN, under factored loads, to the web of ISMB 450 @
710.2 N/m. Design a bolted framed connection. Steel is of grade Fe 410 and bolts are of grade 4.6.
Let us use 20mm dia bolt of grade 4.6
Diameter of the bolt, d = 20mm
Diameter of the hole, d0 = 20+2 = 22mm

For bolts of grade 4.6: fub = 4 x 100 = 400 MPa

fyb = 0.6 x 400 = 240 Mpa

The bolts will be in double shear. Assuming the sum of thickness of the angle legs to be more than the
thickness of web.

provide framing angles 200 × 150 × 10 mm in size.

The bolts will be in DOUBLE shear
i) The Design Shear strength of bolt:
f

Vdsb Vsb  u nn Anb  ns Asb / mb
3

Here, nn = 1 and ns = 1 (Double shear, assuming one shear plane intercepting shank and one shear
plane intercepting threaded portion of bolt)
Asb = ∏ d / 4 = 3.14 x 20 / 4 = 314 mm2
2 2

Anb = 0.78 Asb = 0.78 x 314 = 245mm2

ii) The thickness to be considered are the thickness of the main
plate or the sum of thickness of angles, whichever is less.
Hence, t= 6.7mm

To Find kb
Edge distance, e = 1.7 d0 = 1.7 x 22 = 37.4 Say 40 mm
Pitch, p = 2.5 d = 2.5 x 20 = 50mm

Therefore, Bearing strength of the bolt

Vdpb= (2.5x0.5x20x6.7x400)/1.25 = 53600 N = 53.6 kN
Design Strength of Bolt (Bolt value) is the smallest of Design Shear strength of
Bolts and Design Bearing Strength of Bolt

Therefore, Design Strength of Bolt (bolt value) =53.6kN

Number of bolts is the ratio of design load to bolt value

N = 385/53.6 = 7.1 say 8

Connection of web of ISMB 450 with framing angle leg
Let us provide 20 mm diameter bolts. The bolts will be in single shear. Assuming the thickness of angle leg
to be more than the thickness of web of ISMB 450

The bolts will be in SINGLE shear

i) The Design Shear strength of bolt:
f

Vdsb Vsb  u nn Anb  ns Asb / mb

Here, nn = 1 and ns = 0 (Single shear, assuming shear plane intercepting threaded portion of bolt)
Asb = ∏ d2 / 4 = 3.14 x 202 / 4 = 314 mm2

Anb = 0.78 Asb = 0.78 x 314 = 245mm2

ii) The thickness to be considered are the thickness of the main
plate or the sum of thickness of angles, whichever is less.
Hence, t= 9.4mm

To Find kb
Edge distance, e = 1.7 d0 = 1.7 x 22 = 37.4 Say 40 mm
Pitch, p = 2.5 d = 2.5 x 20 = 50mm

Therefore, Bearing strength of the bolt

Vdpb= (2.5x0.5x20x9.4x400)/1.25 = 75200 N = 75.2 kN
Design Strength of Bolt (Bolt value) is the smallest of Design Shear strength of
Bolts and Design Bearing Strength of Bolt

Therefore, Design Strength of Bolt (bolt value) =45.27kN

Number of bolts is the ratio of design load to bolt value

N = 385/45.27 = 8.5 say 9
