 Thinking of starting a web site but don’t


know how?
 Get a checklist as guideline
 To create and maintain a successful Web
presence.
Questions in your checklist:
 What are the messages that you want to deliver? How
about goals for your website?

 Identify your website target audience. What typically


appeals to your target audience?

 Identify the category that your website contents would


be in.

 How do you envision the design of your web site?

 What are the elements to be inserted into your


website?

 Identify the reasons for creating a website and
how it will fit into your overall goals.

 What will the website do for you?


 Will your website be an information source?
 Do you want to earn money directly from your
website?
 Is your website simply for marketing purposes?

 Set some achievable goals for your website to


prove that the message is delivered.
 Example 1: If your website is selling electronic
gadgets, first level goal would be to attract as many
visitors as possible to discuss or bid for any gadget
available.
 Example 2: If your website is a forum, ensure there
are target for numbers of visitors whom subscribed to
your forum within certain period and that the forum
functions well.
2.0 Website target audience
 Website owner - have a clear idea of your target
audience.
 Only target for specific section in the whole world
 Examples :
 Music lovers: Online Radio, Caller ringtones website, online mp3
sharing websites.
 Handcraft designers: Interior designers and decorators, wedding
boutiques.
 Upper income families: Unique pieces for their homes.
 Women and Mothers: Online shopping for outfits, parental
information and baby care, cosmetics products.

 Do you provide all information and features?

 Parents looking for daycare service for children

 Upper income families

 Mothers
3.0 Category for website contents
 Set the name for your website - recognizable –people
can remember instantly - reflects your website contents
or products.

 Tips:
 Choose a unique name that is easy to remember.
 Eg. Google.com – businesses that chose catchy, distinct and easy
to remember domain names. It turn out to be a good brand name as
well.
 Choose a name using appropriate keywords.
 Eg. Business.com, style.com, money.com, loan.com – but most of
this type of one-keyword names have already been taken or sell at a
very high premium.

 Examples:

 Education related, schools, universities


 Employments, businesses, companies
 Teenagers, networking, social connectors
 Parental and families
 Creative designs for shoppers or designers
 Advertising-based website
Domain
A domain name is an identification label to define
a realm of administrative autonomy, authority, or
control in the Internet, based on the
Domain Name System (DNS).
 Examples:
Education – .edu
Companies (International) – .com
Government agencies – .gov
Network provider - .net

 Web site designs features both form and
function.

 Visual manifestation of your web site’s objective


through the combination of:
 content
 layout
 usability
 navigation.

 Tips:
 Decide on a look that matches your overall purposes.
 Eg. Advertising-based website – focuse on ad spaces and ad
formats while deciding the layout of site. Half page, or portrait
layout, or rectangle in shape?
 Eg. Product-oriented site - focus on how the products will be
presented well in the design. Spaces for featured products? Monthly
promotions?
 Go for a site design that is pleasing overall.
 Simple lines and clean pages – for a more futuristic design.
 Colors and bright images – for more attractive and interesting.
 Think of the site layout that would effectively convey the site
contents.
 Make it easy for users to navigate the site.

 To create a website:

 At least have knowledge on HTML

 Examples of software used to create website:


Microsoft FrontPage, Dreamweaver, Adobe
GoLive, etc.
5.0 Elements to be inserted
 Create a content plan – outline the various types of
content that you will need, the sources of content,
frequency of updates, etc.
 Tips:
 Your website’s goal will determine the nature of your content.
 Whether or not to keep things simple and informative.
 Your content requirements will depend on the type and nature of
you website.
 Whether or not to insert pictures, music, videos, and articles.
 Eg. Online publication: decide on the number of article, stories or
news reports for daily, weekly and monthly updates. Also, standard
content to be prepared, such as privacy, policy and terms of use.

 How do you intend to create your content?


 Either manually or automatically.
 Eg. You may change the header of hundreds of pages you
have using one single tool called as template.
 Eg. Create system for administrator to update the web
content automatically.
 How many people will be involved in creating the
content?
 Your content management system should be equipped to
handle several users – by creating particular account for
each user.
