Composition of Functions

1) The document defines composition of functions as using the range of one function as the domain of another. It provides examples of composing two functions f and g, written as (g◦f)(x). 2) Students are expected to be able to define composition of functions and solve composition of function problems after reviewing this document. It provides step-by-step solutions of composing various functions, noting that explicitly showing the process for each value of x is preferable to forming the composed function directly. 3) Several examples are worked through, applying functions to examples like (f◦g)(3) and (g◦g)(x), to demonstrate composing functions based on their definitions and

GENERAL MATHEMATICS

COMPOSITION OF
FUNCTIONS

PREPARED BY: IMIE L. FLORES, LPT

SHS FACULTY
1
Desired Learning Outcomes:

At the end of the discussion, students

would be able to:

a. define composition of function; and

b. solve composition of function.

2
Composition of Function
 Is yet another method of contributing a
function from two given functions. The
process consists of using the range element
of one function as the domain element of
another function.

3
Definition:
 For the functions of f and g, the composite
function or composition of f by g, is given
by (g◦f)(x)=g f(x) for all x in the domain
of f such that f(x) is in the domain of g.

4
 Solution:
a. (g◦f)=g⟮f(x)+1⟯

(2x+1)(2x+1)

5
Example 2.

Solution:

Method 1:(f◦g)(3)=f⟮g(3)⟯  Evaluate g(3).

= f(27+2)
= f(29)  Substitute in f.
= 2(29)-7
= 58-7
= 51
6
 Method 2:
(f◦g)(x)=2⟮g(x)⟯-7  Form f(g(x)).

 Substitute 3 for x.

= 6(9)-3
= 54-3
= 51

7
Both methods 1 and 2 produced the same result.
Although method 2 required more work, it is the
better method to use if you have to evaluate
(f◦g)(x) for several values of x.

8
Example 3,

Solution:
(f◦g)
(x)=f⟮g(x)⟯ (3x+2)(3x+2)

9
Example 4.

Solution:
(g◦f)(x)=g⟮f(x)⟯

10
Example 5.

Solution:
(g◦g)(x)=g⟮g(x)⟯
=3(3x+2)+2

= 9x+6+2

= 9x+8
11
Example 6.

Solution:
(f◦f)(x)=f⟮f(x)⟯

12
Activity: Solve the following problems.
