Types of competition can be intratype, which occurs when retailers of the same type compete for the same customers, such as different cosmetic direct sales companies. Intertype competition is between retailers of different types who sell similar merchandise to the same customers, like convenience stores, department stores, and drugstores all selling cosmetics.

Types of Competition

1. Intratype competition – occurs when two or more


retailers of the same type compete directly with
each other for the same households. (e.g Avon,
Mary Kay, Mac, etc)

2. Intertype – occurs when two or more retailers of


different type compete directly by attempting to sell
the same merchandise lines to the same
households. (e.g. convenience stores, department
stores and drugstores selling cosmetics)
