Introduction

 Deal with project the Comparative Analysis of Concrete Mix

Proportioning as per BS, ACI and BIS.
 This study is aimed to establish different mixing procedures across
different provisions.
 Calculation of the detailed quantities of construction components with
and without admixtures.
 The determination of the proportions of cement, aggregates and water
to attain the desired strength and properties such as workability,
durability etc.
Aim of the Project

The aim is primarily to examine the mixing proportioning of

various concrete grades with and without admixtures in a
comparative evaluation. This study is aimed to establish different
mixing procedures across different provisions.
Objectives of the Project
 The balance in terms of BS, ACI or BIS should be analyzed
and planned.
 Calculation of the detailed quantities of construction
components with and without admixtures.

 Formulating an extensive mixing proportion for various

concrete grades.

 To analyze the prices of multiple mixtures.

Discussion
 Concrete is a composite material consisting of cement, water, and
aggregates. These ingredients can be mixed in different ratios to attain
desired strengths.

 The difference in the results of mix design using different codes arises due
to the source of materials and different moisture conditions.

 The concrete obtained by properly determining the proportions of the

ingredients of concrete to get the concrete of desired strength and
properties is called as Design Mix Concrete. It is seen that ‘mix design’ not
only produce concrete of desired strength but also an economical one. A
design mix concrete is preferred over a nominal mix concrete.
 Concrete Mix Proportioning : The determination of the
proportions of cement, aggregates and water to attain the
desired strength and properties such as workability,
durability etc., is called as concrete mix proportioning.
Literature Review
Admixtures:
 Kosmatka & Canada, 2011 specified admixtures as ingredients
incorporated other than water and cement to a concrete mix.
 New Zealand Concrete Research Association, 1986 has defined
admixtures as materials that are not more than 5 percent by mass of
cement added during the mixing phase of concrete.
 Dodson, 2013 identify admixtures, before or after mixing, as additional
materials that are not water concrete or aggregates.
 Dodson, 2013 explains the processes used during admixtures. The
processes are Cement dispersal, Alteration of the cement hydration rate,
Answer with hydrating cement by products and there is no reaction.
Methodology

 The type of cement used in this study was ordinary Portland

cement

Pulverized Fuel Ash (PFA)

When pulverized fly ash (PFA) is used in the mix proportions, the calculations are as follows.
 Total percentage of PFA is fixed as specified/desired.
 Water content is reduced depending on Pf .
 Cement and FA Content.
 P = F / (C+F) * 100 ; F = PC’/(100-P)
 W/C = W’ / (C’ +kF)
 C’=[100-P]w’ / [(100-0.7P)(W/C)]
 k = 0.3
 Wet density is assumed same as control mix
 Total aggregate content = D– (C+F) –w
 Fine aggregate content calculated as before

ACI Method of Mix Design
Step 1 :Mean Cylinder Compressive Strength
Assuming 5 percent of results are allowed to fall below specified (k) design strength,
The mean strength, fm = fmin + ks = 30 + 1.68 x 5 = 38.4 MPa
Step 2 :Water/Cement ratio ( T-11.5 )
Strength Criteria
Durability Criteria
The estimated W/C ratio is 0.45 from table (T-11.5) interpolation . Also Max. W/C ratio given
for
special exposure condition in (T-11.6) Max W/C ratio is 0.5.
Step 3 :Mixing Water Content (T-11.8)
Slump = 30 mm
Maximum size of aggregate = 20 mm
Concrete is non air entrained
The mixing water content is 185 kg/m3 of concrete.
The approximate entrapped air content is 2%.
The required cement content = 185/0.45 = 411 kg/m3
Step 4 : Bulk volume of C.A (T-11.4)
Maximum size of C.A = 20 mm
Fineness Modulus of F.A = 2.80
The dry rodded bulk volume of C.A = 0.62 per unit volume of concrete.
The weight of C.A = 0.62 x 1600 = 992 kg/m3

Step 5 :The first estimate of density of fresh concrete = 2355 kg/m3

Step 6 :Weight of Fine Aggregate (F.A)

Weight of water = 185 kg/m3, Weight of cement = 411 kg/m3 ,Weight
of C.A = 992 kg/m3
Weight of F.A = 2355 – (185+411+992) = 767 kg/m3
Alternatively, the weight of F.A. can be determined by the more accurate
absolute volume method
Absolute Volume = weight/ (1000* sp.gravity) M3

Data collection: Absolute Volume of all the known ingredients

Ingredients Weight kg 1m3 Absolute Volume Cm3

Cement 411 411/3.15 x 103 = 130 x 103
Water 185 185/1 x 103 = 185x 103
Coarse aggregate 992 992/2.7 x 103 = 367x 103
Air - 2/100 x 106 = 20 x 103
Total absolute volume = 697 x 103 cm3

Absolute volume of F.A = (1000 –702) x 103 = 298 x 103 cm3

Weight of F.A = Absolute volume of F.A x S.G =

298 x 2.6 = 755kg/m3

Adopt F.A=775Kg/m3
Step 7 :Estimated quantities of materials per cubic meter of concrete are:
Cement = 411 kg/m3, F.A = 755 kg/m3, C.A = 992 kg/m3, Water = 185 kg/m3, Total volume = 2363 kg/m3
Step 8 :The above quantities is on the basis that both F.A & C.A are in saturated and surface dry condition
(SSD conditions).
F.A has surface moisture of 2%
Total free surface moisture in F.A = (2/100 x774) = 15.48 kg/m 3
Weight of F.A in field condition = 774+ 15.48 = 789.48 kg/m3
C.A absorbs 1% water
Quantity of water absorbed by C.A = (1/100 x 992) = 9.92 kg/m 3
Weight of C.A in field condition = 992 - 9.92 = 982 kg/m3
Change in Water Content
Water contributed by F.A = 15.48 kg
Water absorbed by C.A = 9.92 kg
Extra water contributed by aggs. = 15.48 – 9.92 = 5.56 kg
Total water content = 185 – 5.56 = 179.44 kg
Data Collection: Quantities of materials to be used in field,
corrected for free surface moisture in F.A and absorption
characteristic of AC.A

SR Material Weight kg / m 3
1 Cement 411
2 Water 179.4
3 Coarse aggregate 982
4 Fine aggregate 789.48

Field density of fresh concrete = 2361.92 kg/m3
