The hydraulic pump supplies fluid flow to the hydraulic system. As the pump provides flow, it transmits a force to the fluid which encounters resistance and is converted to pressure. There are four main types of hydraulic pumps: gear pumps which use intermeshing gears to move fluid, vane pumps which use a sliding vane rotor, piston pumps which use reciprocating pistons and are suitable for high pressures, and screw pumps which use a helical screw rotor to move fluid. The type of pump used depends on the system pressure and flow requirements.

Unit 5: Hydraulic Pump
The purpose of a hydraulic pump is to supply a
flow of fluid to a hydraulic system. The pump does not create system pressure, since pressure can be created only by a resistance to the flow. As the pump provides flow, it transmits a force to the fluid. As the fluid flow encounters resistance, this force is changed into a pressure. Cont.. Resistance to flow is the result of a restriction or obstruction in the path of the flow. This restriction is normally the work accomplished by the hydraulic system, but can also be restrictions of lines, fittings, and valves within the system. Thus, the pressure is controlled by the load imposed on the system or the action of a pressure-regulating device OPERATION A pump must have a continuous supply of fluid available to the inlet port to supply fluid to the system. As the pump forces fluid through the outlet port, a partial vacuum or low-pressure area is created at the inlet port. When the pressure at the inlet port of the pump is lower than the local atmospheric pressure, atmospheric pressure acting on the fluid in the reservoir forces the fluid into the pump’s inlet. The types of hydraulic pumps Pumps can be divided into 4 types as follows: - 1. Gear 2. Ram 3. Piston 4. Screw Gear Pump Using two or more pairs of gears and is fitted in a steel box with input and output channels. The two gears of a pair is the same size. To get the maximum volume in one rotation, the gear has a minimum size to be used to continue the movement. A gear pump have 8 to 9 teeth. Oil is trapped between the gear teeth and the box will be moved from the input space to output space. Mergers teeth in the gear pair to prevent any leakage that may occur between the pair of gears between input and output space. Pressure in the space of the output is high when compared to the input space. Lining has been used to reduce the flexibility of the pair and gear box oil pump leak can then be controlled. Gear Pump Vane Pump Sliding vane pump containing simple rotor in pairs with several independent sliding vane rotor with radial slit. Liquid will flow into the input space when the space between the rotor and vane rotor casing into a large and liquid is removed from the room next to it when the space becomes smaller when the rotor is spinning. This type of pump use of centrifugal force and a variable volume chamber. Pam Ram (Vane) Piston Pump Piston pumps are mainly used in the system operating pressure is above or equal to 140 bar. The main feature of the piston pump is high efficiency at high pressure. This is particularly important when the flow is constant, regardless of pressure changes. There are two types of multi-piston hydraulic pump, namely: 1. axial 2. radial.
Axial pump is divided into two types:
1. Bent Axis 2. Swash Plates Piston Pump Screw pumps It is tough because the fluid used to act as a protector of the leak. It can be used if the load applied to it does not change. This type of pump requires oil filter installed in series is divided output. Screw pumps
