ANATOMICAL AXES
ANATOMICAL POSITION

The reference point of all human movements.

The body is upright, both feet on the floor and palms facing forward.
BODY PLANES
Midsagittal Plane
Transverse Plane
Coronal Plane
RIGHT SIDE LEFT SIDE

Midsagittal Plane
It is in the midline through the center of the
body, and all other sagittal planes are parallel
to it. It divides the body into left and right
sides.
SUPERIOR

Transverse Plane
It divides the body into superior and inferior
(head and tail) portions. It is typically a
horizontal plane through the center of the
body and is parallel to the ground.
INFERIOR
POSTERIOR ANTERIOR

Coronal Plane
It divides the body into dorsal and ventral
(back and front) portions. It also separates the
anterior and posterior portions.

REFERENCE AXES

An axis is a straight line around

which an object rotates.
ANATOMICAL REFERENCE AXES

FRONTAL VERTICAL SAGITTAL

AXIS AXIS AXIS
Frontal Axis
(X-AXIS)
This axis runs from left to right
through the center of the body.
For example, when a person performs
a somersault they rotate
around this axis.
Ver tic alAxis
(Y-AXIS)
This line runs from top to bottom
through the center of the body.
For example, when a skater
performs a spin they are rotating
around the vertical axis.
Sa gitta l Ax is
(Z-AXIS)
This line runs from front to back
through the center of the body.
For example, when a person performs
a cartwheel they are rotating about
the sagittal axis.
