INTRODUCTION TO SEMINARS AND FIELD TRIPS


LESSON 1 WHAT IS A SEMINAR?

Why do learners need to get out of the four corners of the


classroom sometimes? Field Trips are an essential part of
some areas of study like science and history. Try to imagine
someone training adequately to becoming a pilot but does not
experience flying a plane even once? For this reason, we need
to accept the fact that Field Trips are needed at all levels of
education and that some lessons need to be experienced
outside the four walls of the classroom.
SPECIFIC LEARNING OUTCOMES

These are the learnings students are expected to attain:


 Describe how Field Trips a practical approach to the learners.
 Describe the advantages and disadvantages of Field Trips.
 Know how Field Trips enhance student’s interest in their study.
 Check students perception about this course in terms of:
a) Promoting the different qualities among students;
b) Student’s equality in diversity;
c) Helpful effective learning; and
d) Significance of Field Trips to Education.
It has been found in research that knowledge gained by students during field trips
is retained more than the classroom setup, and it is an effective method to enhance
student's interest in all school subjects. However, we need to admit that Field Trips do
not just happen simply. Field Trips need to be planned and organized to become
successful. Field Trips happen outside the classroom for a specific time and a specific
place. It may take the whole morning, whole afternoon, or significantly cover a whole
week or more depending on the distance to be traveled. Many students consider this
course as the highlight of their experience as a student. This course is also too useful
in education giving out experimental learning outside the classroom.

You may remember having a Field Trips before, and you may think that it is just a
vacation, however, it is NOT, it is actually a tool for education. In this lesson, you will
be introduced to Field Trips, and what are the different types of Field Trips. This lesson
will also help you understand the true concept of Field Trip.
What is the seminar?
A Field Trip is a journey outside the four walls of the classroom with educational objectives, where
students interact with all the itinerary activities to attain knowledge about a specific subject. On this
journey, learners travel to locations that are totally different from schools and classrooms. Through this
journey, students can create an understanding of the true concepts of a specific subject that is not often
possible to bring inside the classroom and apply experiential learning on what has been discussed.

During field trips, a lot of learning experiences happens like lectures where students will be
introduced to things that are available in the venue. Students will also have the hands-on experience
where they will be able to use some of the tools and technology they do not use inside the classroom.
The hands-on activity is another way of learning that gives students practice of something real
compared to merely talking inside the class.
The usual problem of Field Trip is the cost and time spent in traveling. To address certain issues,
some teachers take advantage of computers for a digital field trip to happen. Students surely learn from
this type of approach, however, the bad side is that students can only learn what the device thinks and
do not experience multidimensional activity where all senses are applied.
Kinds of Field Trips

 Formal Field Trip

 Informal Field Trip


Formal Field Trip
This kind of field trip consists of a well-organized
experience that follows a documented format of the
itinerary. It is usually supported by government or non-
government agencies that offer great experience and
programs where students can learn. In this type of Field
Trip, the staffs of the venue are the ones who facilitate
and instructors become comfortable since students are
well associated with different experiences.
Informal Field Trip

This kind of Field trip on the other hand is less


organized and lets students take control of the venue and
their activities. It also helps students to develop their
cognitive learning through first-hand learning. Informal
Field Trip also helps students to interact more with their
environment which leads to more knowledge. Because
there is no itinerary to follow, student’s actions become
voluntary and unforced, activities are not competitive or
assessed, and social interactions are encouraged—
through these, the student’s become encouraged to
examine their connection to the community and the
world.
In addition to the kinds of Field Trips mentioned are the
non-school related trips like family activities contributes
knowledge to students. Though knowledge of science and
technology may be compromised if almost all experiences are
acquired through media like the internet and television, where
the student may have difficulty determining the reality from
entertainment.
What are the advantages and disadvantages of computer?

Field Trips are very useful tools for students to enhance


the lessons they have learned. Students also love field trips
where they are given time to get out of their classroom and
explore new things. A well-planned field trip can give students
a real experience they cannot get inside the four walls of the
classroom. Here are some of the advantages and
disadvantages of field trips.
ADVANTAGES
 New information is introduced to students through a different learning method.
Through this method, students learn the lesson by doing not just by listening to
the teacher’s discussion.
 New experiences are exposed to students that will help enhance knowledge. This
is the best time for students from the low socioeconomic background who may
not have experienced such a thing.
 Lessons that have already been discussed in the classroom can be enhanced in a
new learning environment. Showing new information differently can sometimes
enhance the way students comprehend the lessons before.
 Field Trips can enhance the relationship between students and teachers. Field
trips can also bring the students together like team-building activities. And
sometimes, students who are overlooked in the class because they are quite may
come alive during the trip.
DISADVANTAGES
 Field Trips need ample time to prepare and to make it more meaningful. It needs to be
organized to become effective, thus, coordination to the venue and transportation is required.
 The time to spend on the entire field trip may hit other subjects. This requires proper
coordination with teachers since school attendance policies may count this as an excused
absence.
 Field Trips can be too costly that some students may not afford to join. Trip organizers may
look for ways like asking other parents for a few amounts to help students who cannot afford
to join.
 Organizers may have to deal with permission slips, medical information, and emergency
procedures. These are the required paper works before going out on a field trip since these
activities happen outside the school. The organizers and the teachers become responsible to
look after their students while they are on a field trip.
 Since students will be placed in a larger venue, new surroundings may lead to an additional
behavioral problem that teachers can control. To prevent such issues, students should strictly
abide by the rules and expectations before trips happen, and there should be consequences
for such misbehavior.
