INTRODUCTION TO SEMINARS AND FIELD TRIPS


SPECIFIC LEARNING OUTCOMES
These are the learnings students are expected to attain at the end of this topic :
 Analyze the local and global impact of computing information
technology on individuals, organizations, and society.
 Ability to recognize the legal, social, ethical, and professional issues
involved in the utilization of computer technology and be guided by the
adoption of appropriate professional, ethical, and legal practices.
 Engage in planning self-learning and improving performance as a
foundation for continuing professional development.
 Participate in the generation of new knowledge or in research and
development projects.
The main objectives of conveying information to students and learning are to help students develop
and enhance the concepts they already have, and to help them understand the challenges we encounter
daily in this global village. As a student practicing the IT profession, learning should not only stop in the
four corners of the room. This is the main reason why seminars and field trips are introduced to students.
It is always true that knowledge becomes vital once the student personally experience learning than
imaginative recreation or experiencing it at second-hand—like lectures, storytelling, video presentation,
computer simulation and etc.

Although seminars and field trips can be educational there are schools that still choose to give up
and eliminated this course. The main reason for removing this course is that this may demand a bigger
budget or liability issues. Additionally, the low social economy where parents work and cost issues of the
school system have bad impacts to field trips too.

This course also introduces the practice of the IT profession primarily through learning professional
seminars and planning for field trips for local and international IT Companies. Students learn different
opportunities by which they can practice their chosen profession. Through this course, students gain the
opportunity to experience real-world settings and fill the gap between theories and first-hand setting
practice.
LESSON 1 WHAT IS A SEMINAR?

   Have you ever tried attending a seminar before? Think and


     
compare the knowledge you have learned in the seminar from a
normal classroom setting you have attended. Which setting do you
think did you learn better? Is it from the seminar? Or from the
normal classroom setting? Well, the truth is, students may have
varied answers. There are times where seminars become boring;
however, good and organized planning of the seminar may result
in a great and fun new learning.

These are the learnings students are expected to attain:

 
 Describe how the Seminar's practical approach to the learners.
 Learn how the Seminars course enhances the knowledge that the
students learn from school settings.
 Know how Seminars enhance student’s interest in their study.
 Describe the advantages and disadvantages of Seminars.
Seminars and Fieldtrips become a very useful tool in education, providing experimental
knowledge beyond the classroom. The main purpose of these tools is to let learners explore and
expand their individual knowledge on the lessons discussed in their lectures. Seminars and Field
Trips also provide a great experience for students where professionals and companies can share
how the real world is really about than learning through imagination. Through this course,
students can personally learn new things, ideas, and tips related to the field they choose from.
This lesson will introduce you to seminars and how important it is in the field of education.

The greatest advantage of Seminars for learners is that it creates experiences that learners
cannot forget even time pass by. A well-organized Seminars can lead to great new learning. It can
also help develop the lessons that have been covered and assist with memory retention. To plan
for a seminar takes more than one agenda and a stack of papers to work on. For these reasons,
we have prepared this module to assist students in some ways on how to successfully organize
seminars. But before we proceed with those matters, let us first introduce you to the definitions of
the course. Learn different types of seminars and mention some advantages and disadvantages as
well.

 
What is the seminar?
A seminar is an event where people are gathered together
to formally discuss a certain topic. It is a well-organized group
discussion that follows a formal lecture with interactions that are
guided on a specified theme. During seminars, a formal
presentation of a certain topic is discussed and handled by a
speaker or an instructor, where questions and clarifications are
raised and debate is oftentimes conducted.

An example of a seminar where the speaker discussed women’s


involvement in Dhaka last year. 2015
What are the types of Seminars?

 Mini-Seminar
 Major Seminar
 National Seminar
 International Seminar
Mini Seminar

These are a type of seminars that cover a small


population. A good example of this type of seminars
is a classroom where the teacher is the speaker that
discusses a particular topic. In this type of seminar,
students learn to be organized and are trained well
about a certain topic where questions and
clarifications can be raised. A mini-seminar is
important so students and is a good experience in
conducting major seminars. 
An example of a Mini-Seminar at Pernambuco on Lemann Center Study
Major Seminar

Major Seminars are events where institutions


and department level are the ones who conduct. It
is usually an event where teachers and students are
gathered to participate to discuss a specified topic.
Often, major seminars are organized monthly and a
theme for the specified topic is selected.

The Nato Defense College hosts Annual Anciens’ Seminar


National Seminar

A National Seminar is a type of seminar where


people with academic or professional or an
organization like government, companies, etc. are
gathered together to conduct discussions on a
certain topic. On this type of seminar, experts are
invited as a speaker to share their thoughts about
the subject. Secretaries on this type of seminar
organize the schedule and seminar itineraries.

International Seminar

International Seminars are usually


organized by international organizations to
discuss some wider aspects with a wider
theme. Themes for this type of seminars are
usually focused on Innovations, global
warming, women empowerment, etc.

What are the advantages and disadvantages of
a Seminar?
ADVANTAGES
 It is always worth the time for a learner to listen to great words and knowledge from many
speakers in a single setting. Hitting new learnings with new materials capsulized in just a few
days is not a waste of time.

 A sense of companionship from people with the same field. It is a perfect place where learners
can meet new people with equal interests.

 To be with people who understand career problems and concerns through sharing experiences
can give new hope to aspiring professionals. These words of experiences from experts can
usually boost inspiration to learners.

 It cannot be denied that there are students sometimes who don’t like reading or even attending
class. Seminars, however, are a good experience for them in improving their knowledge of the
specified subject.

 Seminar settings are usually located in quality hotels, as this is the best way to attract attendees.
This is a perfect time for a vacation.
DISDVANTAGES
 It cannot be denied that preparing and attending seminars is too costly. Attendees need to spend
money from their own pocket for travel costs, food, hotel, and other needs.

 There are chances that speakers may share incorrect knowledge, or sometimes not
knowledgeable at all. Attendees need to make personal assessments of the specified topics not
just listen to what the speaker tells about.

 The time spent in attending seminars. Time should be considered when scheduling activities for
activities such as this, for not all people, can spare time away from their real business. There
may be chances that subjects for such an event are not helpful for individual development.

 Too much excitement and expectation from the seminar may result in disappointments.
Sometimes it is not good when reality does not meet expectations.
