The employee’s skill level. The employee’s comprehension of the task. To satisfactorily complete a task, the employee must be aware of what is expected. Motivation THE COSTS OF EMPLOYEE UNDERPERFORMANCE The proficient use of computer technologies in the workplace has not only benefited productivity, but has also created its own set of problems. A survey conducted by Digital Life (Hung, 2007). One hundred participants from SurveyMonkey.com were asked about their so called “office abuses”. The results included: 1. 78 of those surveyed conducted personal phone calls at work; 2. 77 surfed onto websites and forums not related to work; 3. 76 sent personal messages; 4. 72 sent emails; 5. 33 browsed YouTube; and, 6. 28 updated their blog (Hung, 2007). PRODUCTIVITY LOSS DUE TO SOCILA NETWORKING A random survey conducted by the ASSOCHAM Social Development Foundation (ASDF) in which nearly 4000 corporate employees were interviewed between age group ranging from 21-60 years ASSOCHAM’S FINDING Each day an average corporate employee spends an hrs daily on social networking sites. Due to this companies lose close to 12.5% of total productivity each day. 82% workers have facebook account. 77% of workers who have orkut account use it during work hrs. 50% accessed their facebook account. 83% of respondents felt there was nothing wrong in surfing during office hrs. 84% preferred to use break times to surf the internet. 15% said they share intra information on S N S. it also reveals that 93% of youngesters are aware of S N S. INCREASING ATTRITION Companies of IT/ITES sector facing up to 50% employee attrition. Hence employees are banned from accessing all job sites. The Main reason behind this to prevent employees not allow to spend noble time applying for job elsewhere. TOP TEN WAYS TO RETAIN GREAT EMPLOYEES Managers readily agree that retaining your best employees ensures customer satisfaction, product sales, satisfied coworkers and reporting staff, effective succession planning and deeply imbedded organizational knowledge and learning. 1. By Selecting the right people in the first place through behavior- based testing and competency screening. 2. By Offering an attractive, competitive, benefits package with components such as life insurance, disability insurance and flexible hours. 3. By Providing opportunities for people to share their knowledge via training sessions, presentations, mentoring others and team assignments. 4. By giving respect for employees at all times. Listen to them deeply; use their ideas; never ridicule or shame them. TOP TEN WAYS TO RETAIN GREAT EMPLOYEES cont. 5. By Offering performance feedback and praise good efforts and results. 6. By Involve employees in decisions that affect their jobs and the overall direction of the company whenever possible. 7. By Recognize excellent performance, and especially, link pay to performance. 8. By Provide opportunities within the company for cross- training and career progression. People like to know that they have room for career movement. 9. By Communicate goals, roles and responsibilities so people know what is expected and feel like part of the in-crowd. 10. By encourage employees to have good, even best, friends, at work.
