Integrating Technology Into Teaching Models 1

This document discusses integrating technology into teaching models. It provides examples of how teachers can use technology devices like iPads and Chromebooks for testing, reading, writing, and assessments. It emphasizes having students create with technology rather than just consume information. Examples given include having students create 3D models or code programs. The document also discusses how technology has changed teaching over the past 20 years, providing mobility and online resources. Different learning theories are explained, including behaviorism, cognitive constructivism, and social construction. Models for technology integration are presented, such as the SAMR and TPACK frameworks.

Integrating Technology into

Teaching Models
Technology’s Fullest Potential
How do you use technology to its fullest potential?

When school districts started purchasing technology equipment such as IPads, Chromebooks, and tablets, there was a need for them.

⮚ Come up with a plan or goal as to how teachers were going to use these new devices in their classroom

⮚ Use them for testing, online reading, writing, and math programs and assessments

⮚ Every day learning methods for students

”Perhaps you will find success in live instruction and then leveraging online tools for quizzes or reviews. Each classroom and curriculum
will be different, but whatever the strategy, learning has to be front and center”(Guest Author, 2016, para. 10).

Activity: In your groups you will have 3 minutes to create a list of pros and cons of using technology devices. Then each table will give one
pro and one con from their list and a quick response as to why those items were chosen.
Technology’s Fullest Potential
“However, the most engagement and learning will come when
students are encouraged to create, not just consume, using
technology” (Guest Author, 2016, para. 13).
• Get them creating their work instead of just writing about it.
• Middle schools students can take a historic figure or building
and use different tools to the objects come to life.
• Student’s can create 3D project by using a program they are
ready use such as Tinkercad or code it with Scratch.

Activity: In your groups, you will have 5 minutes to produce five objects that students can create from any subject matter. Then you
will have 5 more minutes to narrow the objects down to two. After that you will have 10-15 minutes to produce with a tool and plan
on how you will have students create that object. Remember it must be a technology tool or program that is offered at school.
Technology 20 Years Ago
Discussion: What was technology like for you 20 years ago?

❖ There were only about 10.000 websites compared to today were we have over fifty billion or
more websites.

❖ There were only a couple of million users and today there are over four billion users.

❖ As far as education is concerned, the technology world has changed a lot over the last twenty
years.

❖ Teaching material come mainly from books, companies, or other teachers. Today, teachers use
more online resources especially in the upper grades.
Technology 20 Years Ago
“Digital devices have changed everything. They promote personalization, offer direct access to everything,
support the mashing of media, are interactive, and mobile” (Teachthought, 2019, para. 6).

⮚ The biggest thing that has changed is the mobility to take learning anywhere in the world
⮚ Most programs are web based which allows all learners to retrieve and submit work from any location and on any
mobile device.
⮚ Communication has improved

There is more that has changed!

⮚ Students complete research papers by Internet instead of encyclopedias and readable books.
⮚ Teachers use interactive smart boards instead of chalkboards.
⮚ Students can engage in the learning easier by using a smart board.
⮚ “Electric files and storage instead of filing cabinets” (cxtec, 2020

Learning has definitely gotten a little easier.

Learning Theory: Behaviorism
“Behaviorism is a theory of learning which states all behaviors are
learned through interaction with the environment through a process
called conditioning.” (McLeod, (2017, para. 1).

o Behaviorism is learning by way of practice and drill.

o Such as using flashcards for spelling and learning multiplication facts.
o Students strive to get good grades

Here is a short video about Behaviorism by Marisa Araujo.

Learning Theory: Cognitive Constructivism
The cognitivism theory allows students to:

❖ set goals to motivate their learning.

❖ learn by discovering

❖ build upon existing knowledge

Learning Theory: Social Construction
Social construction is learning by
collaboration and interactions with
other students.

● Group students

● Set a goal

● Share thoughts/ideas

Technology Integration Model: SAMR
“The SAMR Model is a framework created by Dr. Ruben Puentedura that categorizes
four different degrees of classroom technology integration” (Pro tips, 2017, p. 1).

There are four degrees to this model are:

Substitution

Augmentation

Modification

Redefinition
Technology Integration Model: TPACK Framework
The framework for this model is:

✔ provide content knowledge

✔ what type of technology is

needed to learn new material

✔ prepare lessons will help

provide engagement and
motivation

Technology Integration Model

Activity: Now that you have learned about these two models, which model would
work best for your classroom. Take about five minutes to discuss this with your
teammate. Then we will go around each table and see what you chose and why.

Each group will need to have a scribe and a speaker.

What is something that you learned today?

What is something you want to learn more about?
