    POP ROCK

    Farah Nasuha Johari


    Early days
    Origins:

    Pop rock genre come from the early 1950. Singer such Elvis Presley
    amd Chuck Berry plays this genre of music accompanied by guitar
    and bass guitar.
    This music was popular and catchy to the public yet had the
    original hints of rock which has changed ever so much over the
    years.
    Development
    In the 1960's, rock and roll became
    pop rock and then split onto sub
    catagories.

    • The Beatles provided mellow rock


    sounds capitalised on the pop culture.

    • Artists such as Jimi hendrix also


    came onto the scene and mixed up
    the sounds we were hearing.

    1960's is when music really took off. This new wave of
    music gave people inspiration and lead to different
    genres all deriving from the 1950's rockability genre that
    6 the epopel grew up with.

    the heavier rock genres.

    • 60's also saw hippies and punks starting to develp
    s which both enjoyed bands of the pop rock genre. This
    was experienced at Woodstock in 1969.

    As time moved on so did the pop rock genre although now it had became
    that umbrella term over many bands and subs genres.

    mainstream rock went into soft and hard rock. 9
    Soft rock involving Fleetwood mac an Rod Stewart and hard rock being
    Led Zeppelin( my favourite ) and the punk scene which had by now
    developed into massive scene with the Ramones, the clash andd the sex

    pistols leading the way. but this era lasted no more that 5 years before
    punk died. 0
    soft rock was the kind of background which continiued on into pop rock
    music. Queen was one of the example of soft rock band. This bands was

    stylish and began involving their weird and extraordinary rock star look
    that comes with being a star in this musc scene.

    8 At this era, disco dominated the major music scene with the
    pop rock taking a back seat. rock began to distance itself apart
    0 more with glam rock, metal and alternative being different
    scenes people followed.
    ' pop rock was alternative at this point. 1980's was a lull in pop
    s rock. it had been swolled up and spat out.

    THE RETURNS
    micheal Jackson started exploring into the rock genre with billie 9
    jean. many major bands were reknown for their rock culture and
    style which became so popular for the people of the time. 9
    the band from America which made the new scene of pop rock as 0
    we know today with bands being male fronted with the iconistic
    style and somewhat childish nature of partying. '
    some of them that were well known were Blink 182 and Foo
    Fighters. this style echoed across the US and UK. it was a mix of

    punk rhythms with a mix of catchy pop culture. even groups
    could mix grunge with pop to make post grunge under the pop

    0 In the 2010 thw rock world seems to be consintantly stable
    with all genres having major well known artists. Indie and rock
    ' and alternative rock have had a huge surge with the hipster
    culture which began in early years of the era.

    s Many succesful bands continue to thrive well in the charts. Pop


    eock is sstill there yet teh artists within the genre are now
    experimenting and following suit of the new succesful bands
