Polynomial: X X X X

The document defines a polynomial as any algebraic expression where the power of each variable is a whole number. It provides examples of polynomials such as x + 2x - 3 and 5x3 + 2xy + 1. The key characteristics of a polynomial are that the variables' powers are whole numbers. A polynomial can be classified based on the number of terms as monomial, binomial, or trinomial. The degree of a polynomial is the highest power of any term.

POLYNOMIAL

Any algebraic expression in which the power of each variables

are whole numbers is called a polynomial.
Examples: 1

x  2x  3
2 5 xy  9 x  3 x  5 xy  9 x  3 x 2
5 x 3  2 xy  1
3
3x 2 yz  7 xy  9 x 4x  7x 
3
 4 x 3  7 x 2  3 x 1
2

x
5  51  5 x
0
These algebraic expressions are not polynomials.

3x 4  7 x 3  3x  5

x2
3  5 y 1
x
These algebraic expressions are polynomials.
POLYNOMIAL
p ( x )  x 2
 x  1

p(x, y)  5 x3 y 2  3x 2 y  2

Note: All the polynomials are

multinomials but all the multinomials
are not polynomial.
WHICH OF THE FOLLOWING
ALGEBRAIC EXPRESSIONS ARE
POLYNOMIAL ? GIVE REASON.
2
5 x y  3x  x
3 2

3
2 is a polynomial because the power of the variables
5 x y  3x  x Of each terms are whole numbers.
3 2

3
4ab 2  3 ab  5
4ab 2  3 ab  5 isinnot a polynomial because the power of the variable a
the second term is ½ which is not a whole number.
COMPONENTS OF POLYNOMIAL
 Variable- A quantity which takes different
values throughout the mathematical
operation is called a variable. The variable
are usually denoted by x,y,z etc.

1
3 x y  5 xy 
2

In this polynomial x and y are the variables.

 Constant- A quantity which has the same
value throughout the mathematic operation
is called a constant. Thus the numbers
-1,0,5,3/2 etc are constants. The constants
are usually denoted by a,b,c etc.
1
3 x y  5 xy 
2

In this polynomial -1/2 is the constant.

 Numerical coefficient- A number multiplied
or divided with a variable is called numerical
coefficient.
1
3 x y  5 xy 
2

2
2
3 is the numerical coefficient of x y
-5 is the numerical coefficient of xy.
 Literal Coefficient –A variable multiplied
with another variable is called literal
coefficient.

1
3x y  5 x 
3 2

2
3 2
x is the literal coefficient of y

3x 2 yz  7 xy  9 x

x2 y is the literal coefficient of y.

TYPES OF A POLYNOMIAL
On the basis of number of terms
Monomial- polynomial having singe term
5x 2 y
Binomial-polynomial having two(unlike) terms
1 3
a  4a
2

Trinomial-polynomial having three(unlike) terms

3x 2 yz  7 xy  9 x
DEGREE OF POLYNOMIAL
3a 2 It’s degree is 2
5x 2 y It’s degree is 3(2+1)
x 2
 x  1
Degree of 1st term=2
Degree of 2nd term=1
Degree of 3rd term=0
Thus, degree of the polynomial is 2
5x3 y 2  3x 2 y  2
Degree of 1st term=3+2=5
Degree of 2nd term=2+1=3
Degree of 3rd term=0
Thus, degree of the polynomial is 5
