Automatic Voltage Regulator

The document discusses automatic voltage regulators (AVRs) and their role in regulating generator voltage levels. It explains that an AVR takes fluctuating voltage input and outputs a constant voltage level. For generator systems using a permanent magnet generator (PMG), the AVR is powered independently by the PMG to regulate the main alternator voltage. The document also covers thyristor-based static AVRs, the effects of real and reactive power loading on voltage, and techniques for manually and automatically synchronizing and load sharing between multiple generator alternators run in parallel.

Automatic Voltage Regulator

What is an AVR?
• In general, the AC automatic voltage regulator (AVR) is a device
designed to regulate voltage automatically — that is, to take a fluctuating
voltage level and turn it into a constant voltage level.
What is a generator PMG system?
• An AC alternator with PMG has an AVR which is independently powered from a separate
permanent magnet generator (PMG). Made of two parts, the PMG rotor and the PMG stator. The
PMG rotor is mounted on the main alternator rotor shaft and voltage is induced in the PMG stator
as the PMG rotor moves the permanent magnets. The power from the PMG stator is then used to
power the AVR.
