Lesson 7 Division of Polynomials

This document discusses dividing polynomials using long division and synthetic division. It defines key polynomial terms like monomial, binomial, trinomial, and degree of a polynomial. It provides examples of dividing polynomials using long and synthetic division. Learners are given practice problems to divide polynomials using synthetic division and find the quotients and remainders.

Division of Polynomials

Learning Targets:

1. perform division of
polynomials using long and
synthetic division; and
2. perform generalized
synthetic division.
Activity 1: Spot the Difference
•Look
at each pair of expressions below. Identify the
expression which is a polynomial and which is not.
Give your reason.
1. 2x + 1 and + 1
2. + + 7 and + - 7
3. 2 and
4. - + x – 4 and - 4
5. ( x + 5) ( 9x + 1)2 ( x – 4) and
• A polynomial of degree n in x is an algebraic
expression that contains a specific number of
terms, each of which is of the form axn, where a is a
real number and n is a whole number (page 79).

Monomial - polynomial with 1 term

Binomial - polynomial with 2 terms
Trinomial - polynomial with 3 terms
• Degree of a term in a polynomial in x
- refers to the exponent of x.
 Degree of any real number, except 0, is 0.
 Zero (0) has no degree.
 Degree of a polynomial
- refers to the highest degree among the
degrees of the terms in the polynomial
