Engineering Standards and Ethics DR Syed Misbahuddin

This document discusses engineering ethics and standards. It begins by defining engineering ethics as the study of morally desirable decisions, policies, and values in engineering practice and research. It notes that an engineer's decisions can impact products, services, and society. The document then outlines some general ethics like respecting others, keeping promises, and avoiding dishonesty. It also discusses specific ethics for engineers like avoiding conflicts of interest, not misrepresenting knowledge, and acting in the best interests of society. Professional ethics are distinguished from personal morality, with examples of responsibilities like loyalty to employers and respect for authority.

Engineering Ethics

Engineering Standards and Ethics

Dr Syed Misbahuddin
Introduction
• Engineering is the process of developing an efficient mechanism which quickens
and eases the work using limited resources, with the help of technology
• Ethics are the principles accepted by the society, which also equate to the moral
standards of human beings. An engineer with ethics, can help the society in a
better way.
• Hence the study of Engineering ethics, where such ethics are implemented in
engineering by the engineers, is necessary for the good of the society.
• Engineering Ethics is the study of decisions, policies and values that are morally
desirable in engineering practice and research.
• The ethical decisions and moral values of an engineer need to be considered
because the decisions of an engineer have an impact the products and services
Ethics in General
• Not only an engineer, but everyone has to follow a set of morals in
order to keep away from getting morally degraded. Our behavior
should include the following −
• Respecting others and ourselves.
• Respecting the rights of others.
• Keeping promises.
• Avoiding unnecessary problems to others.
• Avoiding cheating and dishonesty.
• Showing gratitude towards others and encourage them to work.
Ethics in Engineering
• Ethics are principles followed depending upon the moral responsibility that a
person feels.
• The study of related questions about moral ideals, character, policies and
relationships of people and organizations involved in technological activity,
can be termed as Engineering ethics.
• An engineer whether he works individually or works for a company, has to go
through some ethical issues
• The conditions pose ethical challenges may be conceptualization of a product,
issues arising in design and testing departments, or may be on the issues
involving the manufacturing, sales and services.
• Questions related to morality also arise during supervision and team works.
Engineering Ethics
• Often, a deficiency in engineering ethics is found to be one of the root causes of an
engineering failure.
• An engineer, as a professional, has a responsibility to their client or employer, to their
profession, and to the general public, to perform their duties in as conscientious a manner as
possible.
• An ethical engineer is one who avoids conflicts of interest, does not attempt to misrepresent
their knowledge
• An ethical engineers do not accept jobs outside their area of expertise,
• They act in the best interests of society and the environment, fulfills the terms of their
contracts or agreements in a thorough and professional manner, and promotes the education
of young engineers within their field.
• Many of these issues are discussed in detail at the ethics homepage of the
National Society of Professional Engineers. There you will find an example of an engineering
Code of Ethics and links to additional information on engineering ethics. Failures in
engineering ethics can have many legal consequences as well, as in the case of a mall collapse
in Korea.
Professional ethics
• Professional ethics is different from personal morality
Professional ethics Contd..
• Why not take a bribe?  three reasons--
• breaks the law
• violates professional ethics
• violates moral norms about cheating
• professional ethics are a kind of contract
• you get certain privileges as a member of a particular profession and in return you are
required to follow the rules of that profession
• because you agree to follow the rules in return for privileges you don't have the right
to ignore those rules that you don't agree with (besides which, people who think they
are above the rules usually end up deceiving themselves into serious trouble)
• Professional ethics may expect you to do something contrary to your personal moral
views, for example a lawyer who takes on defending a murderer is expected by
professional ethics to do a good job even if s/he thinks the murderer deserved to be
convicted.  (Lawyers don't have to take a case, but somebody has to take the job of
defending the murderer.)
Responsibilities of Engineers

• Loyalty to corporations, Respect for authority, collegiality with other

teamwork.

emotions and a sense of personal identity as it does with actions.
Collegiality
• Collegiality is the term that describes a work environment where
responsibility and authority are shared among the colleagues.

Respect for Authority
• In order to meet the organizational goals, the professionals should
possess respect for authority. The levels of authority maintained by
