● The Revolutions of 1848 were a series of democratic
revolts against European monarchies that took place
between 1848-1849
● Revolutions of 1848, series of republican revolts
against European monarchies, beginning in Sicily, and
spreading to France, Germany, Italy, and the Austrian
Empire.
● After 1848, the European powers seemed incapable of
united action to maintain the status quo, probably
because the revolutions of 1848 weakened the regimes
in the eyes of their people.
Thesis:

Europe in the 1840s continued to have many

revolutions which shaped and influenced the world,
and also created what we know today at modern
Europe.
The French Revolution of 1848
● This revolution was the start of the European revolutions of 1848
● In France the revolutionary events ended the July Monarchy and led to the creation of the French
Second Republic.
The Italian Revolution of 1848
● The 1848 Revolutions in the Italian states, part of the wider Revolutions of 1848 in Europe, were
organized revolts in the states of the Italian peninsula and Sicily, led by intellectuals and agitators who
desired a liberal government.
● As Italian nationalists they sought to eliminate reactionary Austrian control.
German Lands Revolution of 1848
● Also called the March Revolution
● They were a series of loosely coordinated protests and rebellions in the states of the German
Confederation, including the Austrian Empire.
What did the revolutions achieve?
● The revolutions of 1848 failed to achieve their goals
because of a lack of strong allies and support, weak
military support of the rulers, and the division among
the revolutionaries.
● After 1848, the European powers seemed incapable of
united action to maintain the status quo, probably
because the revolutions of 1848 weakened the regimes
in the eyes of their people.
