Introduction to CEGIS
Company’s Background
 Established on May 16, 2002 as a public trust.
 Environmental and Geographic Information System (EGIS) in 1996 and EGIS-2 in 1997, both supported by
the Government of Bangladesh
 The center is under Ministry of Water Resources.
 Developed Community-based Flood Information System
 Part of Australian funded Bangladesh integrated water resources assessment project since 2011

Company’s Objective

 To Prepare an integrated and intensive natural resource database

 To prepare a web enable system for organized storage and dissemination of data.

 To prepare supplementary tools to expose data and easier external data receive.

 To support the country’s efforts for sustainable socio-economic development by providing

scientific, technological and socio-economic know-how.

 To provide solutions to issues and problems in a wide range of sectors, such as – but not limited

to – water, land, agriculture, meteorology, forestry, fisheries, morphology, ecology, environment,

climate change, archeology, socio-economy, power, transportation and disasters. 5

 To support the management of natural resources for sustainable socio-economic development at

home and abroad, using integrated environmental analysis, geographic information systems,

remote sensing techniques, database, information technology and other modern technology

outfits.

Divisions of CEGIS
• Water Resources Management Division
- Conducts water resources assessment and planning at macro and micro levels for IWRM.
- Deals with application of RS-GIS based planning tools, hydrological modeling and techniques for environmental management
of natural resources.
- Carries out water supply, WASH and WATSAN related activities.

• River, Delta & Coastal Morphology Division


-Carries out studies on river, delta and coastal morphology using a unique method based on RS-GIS technology including spatial
and hydro-morphological information to predict and monitor morphological changes and bank erosion of rivers.
- Conducts morphological and platform analyses
- Optimizes dredging for maintaining navigation in the major rivers.

• Climate Change & Disaster Management Division


- Conducts studies on climate change impacts, vulnerability and adaptation measures.
- Generates the climatic parameters through statistical and dynamic method from GCM.
- Applies state-of-the earth mathematical modeling tools for understanding the physical phenomena of hydrological system
and for assessment of impact of climate induced disasters.

• Socio-economic & Institutional Division


- Socio-economic & Institutional Division carries out socio-economic studies which include
1. Social Impact Assessment (SIA),
2. Resettlement Action Plan (RAP); 8
3. Planning and Management of socio-economic resources;
4. Poverty, Gender and Livelihood studies;
5. Economic and Institutional analyses;
6. Anthropological investigations;
7. Social mobilization and Formation of institutions, etc.

• Ecology, Forestry & Biodiversity Division


- Conducts integrated natural resource planning and management of ecosystems.
- Carries out environmental survey, environmental quality monitoring and assessment to support EIA/SIA
studies.
- Also involves in Biodiversity Assessment, Strategic Environmental Assessment etc.

• Agricultural & Fisheries Division


- Provides services in planning and management of agricultural resources including crop, soil, irrigation,
fisheries and livestock.
- It carries out research, crop and fish modeling, drought assessment and management, food security, value
chain, baseline, monitoring, impact evaluation & assessment, crop suitability, climate change impact &
greenhouse gas assessment
- Prepare mitigation and adaptation plan on agricultural sector.

• Power, Energy & Mineral Resources Division


- Conducts studies on the Power, Energy and Mineral Resources sectors
- Facilitating enabling environment for generation of electrical power to fulfill the demand of the country.
- This Division is involved in Environmental and Social Impact Assessment (ESIA), Environmental Compliance 9
Monitoring and Feasibility studies of power related projects.
• Geographic Information System Division

- Applies geospatial technology in diversified fields including natural resource management, environment,
climate, hydrologic and hydrodynamic modeling and so on.
- Provides services for development, integration and analysis of geospatial database, development of DEM,
desktop/web based geospatial applications, web-based LIS and other web GISs.
- Conducts various digital surveys including RTK, Total Station and DGPS Survey as well as provides customized
GIS training for the clients.
• Remote Sensing Division
- Produces land cover and land use data, natural resources mapping, change detection mapping, erosion-accretion
mapping, flood inundation mapping, agricultural crop mapping, environmental impact assessment mapping
- Clutter data for wireless telecommunication network planning using state-of-the-art technologies currently
achieved in the remote sensing field.
- Offers basic and advance training on optical and radar satellite image processing and applications using Eras
Imagine and Google Earth Engine.

• Database, ICT and System Management Division


- Develops GIS and Web-based application software and is responsible for database management.
- Strives to promote standardization of metadata, data quality, data format, etc.
- Responsible for storing and managing of all data and information produced under different projects of CEGIS.
- Manages computer systems and networking, server protocols, internet, and other associated hardware and
software used in CEGIS. 10
• Research, Development & Training Division
- Conducts innovative researches in the fields of natural resources management, livelihoods, disaster
management, climate change, erosion prediction etc. using state-of-the-art modeling tools.
- Organizes trainings on GIS, Remote Sensing, Integrated Water Resources Management, Social and
Environmental Impact Assessment, Delta and Coastal Morphology, Climate Change and Disaster
Management, Land Acquisition and Resettlement Management and Modeling for professionals both at
home and abroad.

• Quality Management & Publication Division


- Manages and enhances the quality of reports, develops guideline and provides technical support for the
reports.
- Responsible to edit and review all the reports
- Deals with all sorts of graphic design related activities and also publishes the quarterly Newsletter of CEGIS.

• Human Resource & Business Development Division


- Explores business opportunities and brings new projects to the CEGIS portfolio
- Develop client networks and maintaining liaison with local and international partners.
- Helps in formulating various office policies as well as in developing human resources.

• The program is beneficial not only in term of technical or academic base

• Through the entire industrial training program the corporation is found to


be very well organized and developed is every walk of its management and
administration aspects.
