However, as it is written:

“What no eye has seen, what

no ear has heard, and what
no human mind has
conceived”— the things God
has prepared for those who
love him—

Derivatives of Sums and
Differences
𝐼𝑓  𝑓 𝑎𝑛𝑑 𝑔𝑎𝑟𝑒 𝑡𝑤𝑜  differentiable  functions  at  x  then

 𝑑𝑦 𝑑𝑦 𝑑𝑦
𝑑𝑥
[ 𝑓 ( 𝑥 )+ 𝑔 ( 𝑥 ) ] = 𝑑𝑥
[ 𝑓 𝑥 ] + [ 𝑔 ( 𝑥) ]
( )
𝑑𝑥

and

 𝑑𝑦 𝑑𝑦 𝑑𝑦
𝑑𝑥
[ 𝑓 ( 𝑥 ) − 𝑔 ( 𝑥 ) ]= 𝑑𝑥
[ 𝑓 𝑥 ]−
( )
𝑑𝑥
[𝑔 ( 𝑥 )]

In Simpler notation

 ( 𝑓 ′
± 𝑔) = 𝑓 ′ ± 𝑔 ′
Product rule
The Product rule is a formal rule for differentiating problems where
function is multiplied by another. The rule follows from the limit
definition of derivative and is given by.

(The Product Rule) If f and g are differentiable at x, then

In Simpler notation
 ( 𝑓 ′ ′
. 𝑔 ) =𝑓 . 𝑔 + 𝑔 . 𝑓 ′
In words, The derivative of the product of two functions is equal to the first function times
the derivative of the
second plus the second function times the derivatives of the derivative of the first.
Keep in mind that
Example:
 𝑓𝑖𝑛𝑑 𝑑𝑒𝑟𝑖𝑣𝑎𝑡𝑖𝑣𝑒 : 𝑓 ( 𝑥 )=3 𝑥2 +2 𝑥
Use the power rule to help:

The power rule in calculus is a fairly simple rule that helps you find the derivative of a
variable raised to a power, such as: x^5, 2x^8, 3x^(-3) or 5x^(1/2). All you do is take
the exponent, multiply it by the coefficient (the number in front of the x), and
decrease the exponent by 1

¿  3 [ 2 𝑥 ] +2 [1]
 ¿ 6 𝑥+2
 𝑓𝑖𝑛𝑑 𝑑𝑒𝑟𝑖𝑣𝑎𝑡𝑖𝑣𝑒 : 𝑓 ( 𝑥 )=𝑥 3 − 5 𝑥 2
Again, Use the power rule to help:
  𝑑 3 2
¿ [ 𝑥 −5 𝑥 ]
𝑑𝑥
  𝑑 3 𝑑 2
¿ [ 𝑥 ] −5 [𝑥 ]
𝑑𝑥 𝑑𝑥

 ¿ 3 𝑥 2 −5[ 2 𝑥]

¿ 3 𝑥 2 −10 𝑥

  𝒅𝒚 𝟒 𝟑
𝒇𝒊𝒏𝒅 𝒇𝒐𝒓 𝒚=(𝟑 𝒙 +𝟐)(𝟕 𝒙 −𝟏)
𝒅𝒙
There two methods to solve this problem.
One is to multiply to find the product and then use the derivative of the
sum rule.
The second is to directly use the product rule. Either rule will produce the same answer.
We begin with the sum rule.

¿(𝟑
  𝒙 𝟒 +𝟐)(𝟕 𝒙 𝟑 −𝟏)
¿  𝟐𝟏 𝒙 𝟕 +𝟏𝟒 𝒙 𝟑 − 𝟑 𝒙 𝟒 − 𝟐
¿  𝟐𝟏 𝒙 𝟕 −𝟑 𝒙 𝟒 +𝟏𝟒 𝒙𝟑 − 𝟐
Taking the derivative of the sum yields

 𝒅𝒚 𝟔 𝟑 𝟐
=𝟏𝟒𝟕 𝒙 −𝟏𝟐 𝒙 + 𝟒𝟐 𝒙 − 𝟎
𝒅𝒙
¿  𝟏𝟒𝟕 𝒙𝟔 −𝟏𝟐 𝒙𝟑 + 𝟒𝟐 𝒙 𝟐
Now we use the product rule:

¿ 𝟏𝟒𝟕 𝒙𝟔 −𝟏𝟐 𝒙𝟑 + 𝟒𝟐 𝒙 𝟐

As you notice we have the same answer:

Example

 𝑫𝒊𝒇𝒇𝒆𝒓𝒆𝒏𝒕𝒊𝒂𝒕𝒆 𝒚=( 𝒙 𝟑+ 𝟕 𝒙 −𝟏)(𝟓 𝒙 +𝟐)

¿ ( 𝒙𝟑 +𝟕 𝒙 − 𝟏 ) ( 𝟓 )+ ( 𝟑 𝒙 𝟐 +𝟕 ) (𝟓 𝒙+ 𝟐)

 ¿ 𝟓 𝒙 𝟑 +𝟑𝟓 𝒙 −𝟓+𝟏𝟓 𝒙 𝟑+ 𝟔 𝒙𝟐 +𝟑𝟓 𝒙+𝟏𝟒

𝟑 𝟐
¿ 𝟐𝟎 𝒙 +𝟔 𝒙 +𝟕𝟎 𝒙 +𝟗

Example   ]

𝟑 𝒕 𝟑 √ 𝒕 +𝟏𝟎𝒕 −𝟏 /𝟐 √ 𝒕

¿
√𝒕
  𝟑 𝒕 𝟑 √𝒕 𝟏𝟎 𝒕 − 𝟏/ 𝟐 √ 𝒕
¿ +
√𝒕 √𝒕
¿ 𝟑 𝒕 𝟑 +𝟏𝟎 𝒕 − 𝟏/ 𝟐

Since we have the original form we can get derivative using sum rule

  ]   ]
𝟐 − 𝟏/ 𝟐
  ¿ 𝟗 𝒕 +𝟏𝟎 𝒕
  𝟏𝟎𝟐
¿𝟗𝒕 +
√𝒕
Activities: find the derivatives of the ff problem Using the appropriate rule.

1 ¿. 𝑦=9 𝑎2 −2 𝑏2 +3 𝑥2 −𝑎 − 𝑏+5 𝑥

 2 ¿ . 3 3 3 4
𝑦 =( 𝑥 −3 𝑥 + 𝑥 ) .(2 𝑥 +7 𝑥 )

3 ¿ . 𝑦 =𝑥1 /3 + 𝑥 1/ 2
