Calculus Topic 4

Implicit differentiation involves finding the derivative of an implicit function by differentiating an implicit equation with respect to the variable of interest. The key steps are: 1) Apply the differentiation operator to both sides of the implicit equation 2) Simplify the resulting equation 3) Isolate the derivative term (dy/dx) Examples are provided to demonstrate implicit differentiation and solving for the derivative.

Implicit Differentiation

 involves finding the derivative of an implicit function by differentiating an

implicit equation.

 The first step is to apply the differentiation operator to both sides of the implicit
equation. The next step is to simplify

 the resulting equation. The final step is to isolate for dy/dx .

Ex. x2+y2 = 1
  1

  𝑑𝑦 𝑑𝑦
2𝑥 +2 𝑦 =0
𝑑𝑥 𝑑𝑥
  𝑑𝑦   =
2 𝑥 +2 𝑦 =0
𝑑𝑥
•Differentiation

The function is in term of x

the equation has 2 variables

)’
This might be difficult or even impossible
  𝟐
𝒙 + 𝒚 𝟐=𝟗
We can differentiate it this as it is
And simply differentiate with one specific variables
With respect to X
And then solve for y’ or

  (

Take the derivative The derivative of

with respect to x constant is ZERO

We are treating y as a function of x

x is differentiated
normally
2  𝑥
Y is a function of x so we use the chain rule

 𝑓 ( 𝑔 ( 𝑥 ) ) =𝑓 ′ ( 𝑔 ( 𝑥 ) ) . 𝑔 ′ ( 𝑥 )
[ ]

  ′ ′
[ 𝑓 ( 𝑔 ( 𝑥 ) ) ] =𝑓 ( 𝑔 ( 𝑥 ) ) . 𝑔 ′ ( 𝑥 )

  𝑑y
2 𝑥 +2 𝑦 =0
𝑑𝑥
Which we can also called as y (prime)
 2 𝑥 +2 𝑦 . 𝑦 ′=0
Then we can solve

2  𝑦 . 𝑦 ′ =− 2 𝑥
  ′−2 𝑥
𝑦=
2𝑦
  ′ −𝑥
𝑦=
𝑦

This is the derivative of the of the original function with respect to x.

Example A. Zero   2
𝑥 𝑦 + 𝑥 𝑦 2=3 𝑥
 𝑑 2𝑑 2 𝑑𝑦
𝑥 𝑦+ 𝑥 𝑦 = (3 𝑥)
𝑑𝑥 𝑑𝑥 𝑑𝑥

Product Rule
 𝑥2 𝑦 ′ +2 𝑥𝑦 + 𝑥( 𝑦 2 )′

Chain Rule
  2
𝑥 𝑦 ′ +2 𝑥𝑦 + 𝑥 𝟐 𝒚 𝒚 ′
𝟐  𝒇 ( 𝒙 ) 𝒇 ′(𝒙 )

𝒚= 𝒇 ( 𝒙) > ¿
 𝑥2 ′ ′
𝑦 +2 𝑥𝑦 + 𝑥 2 𝑦 𝑦 + ( 𝑥 ) 𝑦 =3
′ 2

The derivative of x is 1

  2
𝑥 𝑦 ′ +2 𝑥𝑦 + 𝑥 2 𝑦 𝑦 ′ + 𝑦 2=3

  2
𝑥 𝑦 ′ +2 𝑥𝑦 𝑦′ =3 −2 𝑥𝑦 − 𝑦 2

Factor out the y’

 𝑦 ′ (𝑥 ¿ ¿ 2+ 2 𝑥𝑦 )=3 −2 𝑥𝑦 − 𝑦2 ¿
