Cumulative Frequency Graphs: DR Frost

Here are the steps to find the median from a grouped frequency table: 1. Calculate the cumulative frequency by adding the frequencies together. 2. Find the class interval where the cumulative frequency is greater than or equal to half the total number of values. 3. The median will be the midpoint of this class interval. So for this example, we would add up the frequencies to get the cumulative frequency. Then look for the class interval where the cumulative frequency exceeds half the total number of values. The median would be the midpoint of that class interval.

range) for the median, using something called a cumulative frequency graph.

Summary
You use a time machine (you made in DT) to travel forward
time to when you’re doing your GCSE, in order to give
yourself 2 things not to forget when drawing a cumulative
frequency diagram. What do you tell yourself?

Plot the point with 0 cumulative frequency at the

? not necessarily at the
START of your first range,
start of the x-axis.

Use the END of each range when plotting points,

? frequency includes all
so that your cumulative
