Overview of wireless And Mobile computing
What is Mobile Computing?

Mobile

 Able to move freely.

 usually Wireless is need to move

freely .

 Computing

 The activity of performing

computations.

 Performing computation in mobile

units.

Why mobile computing?

What is the computing?

• The activity of performing computations.

• Computing can also be defined as the activity of using

computer hardware and software for some purpose.

What is the mobile?

• That someone /something can move or be moved easily

and quickly from place to place

New form of computing

11/04/2020 BY ABDELA A.(M. TECH CSE) 7

What is mobile computing?
• In recent years, distributed computer has become the
norm, especially after the advent of the internet.

• Today, technological advances are shaping a new

computing environment where the user is free from the
need to work at a specific location, and is even enabled
to work while on the move.

• This new paradigm is often called MOBILE COMPUTING.

11/04/2020 BY ABDELA A.(M. TECH CSE) 8

What is mobile computing?

• Mobile Computing is an umbrella

term used to describe
technologies that enable people to
access network services anyplace,
anytime, and anywhere.

• Mobile computing can be defined

as a computing environment over
physical mobility.

11/04/2020 BY ABDELA A.(M. TECH CSE) 9

What is mobile computing
• Mobile computing is a technology that allows transmission
of data, voice and video via a computer or any other
wireless enabled device without having to be connected
to a fixed physical link.

• Mobile computing is the process of computation on a

mobile device.

• In mobile computing, a set of distributed computing

systems or service provider servers participate, connect,
and synchronize through mobile communication protocols.
11/04/2020 BY ABDELA A.(M. TECH CSE) 10
What is mobile computing
• Mobile computing Provides decentralized (distributed)
computations on diversified devices, systems,

• and networks, which are mobile, synchronized, and interconnected

via mobile communication standards and protocols.

• Mobile computing Also called pervasive computing when a set of

computing devices, systems,

• or networks have the characteristics of transparency, application-

aware adaptation, and have an environment sensing ability.

Why Go for Mobile?
• Enable anywhere/anytime/anyone connectivity.

Bring computer communications to areas without preexisting

infrastructure.

 Enable mobility.

Enable new applications.

An exciting new research area.

What is Mobility?
• A person who moves:

• Between different geographical locations

• Between different networks

• Between different communication devices

• Between different applications

• A device that moves:

• Between different geographical locations

• Between different networks

11/04/2020 BY ABDELA A.(M. TECH CSE) 14

Types of mobility

• There are two kinds of mobility’s.

User mobility: In user mobility a user can access the same or

similar services at different places.

• That is the user can be mobile, and services will follow him.

Device mobility :the communication device moves with or

without help of user.

• Several techniques in communication network guarantees that

communication is even possible while device is being moved.

Question

Is wireless mobile?
or
Is mobile wireless?

11/04/2020 BY ABDELA A.(M. TECH CSE) 16

Cont.…
• The following are the four different characteristics exhibit by the
communication devices.

Fixed and wired:

• This category describes the fixed desktop computers in the office,

which are connected through the wired network.

• The weight and power consumption of these devices does not permit
for mobility, these devices use fixed network for information
accessing.

Mobile and wired:

• The most of the portable computing devices fall within this category.

11/04/2020 BY ABDELA A.(M. TECH CSE) 17

Cont..
• We can easily carry these devices (eg: laptops) from one place
to another place and reconnecting to the organization’s network
via the telephone lines or a modem.

Fixed and wireless: This kind of technique is especially used for

installing networks in historical places such as buildings to avoid
damages by fixing cables and other equipment.

• This method can also be used for fastest network setup.

11/04/2020 BY ABDELA A.(M. TECH CSE) 18

Cont..
• Mobile and wireless:

• This is the most recent technique, in which no cable

restricts, the user, who can roam between different
wireless networks.

• Eg:GSM –Global system for mobile communications.

11/04/2020 BY ABDELA A.(M. TECH CSE) 19

Computing Mobile devices
• A mobile device is a pocket-sized computing device, typically
having a display screen with touch input or a miniature keyboard.
• Due to the rapid advancement of the technology its hard to make
a specific classifications of mobile devices.
• Mobile Computing consists of various types of devices.
• They are built for various purposes.
• Mobile computers are built and used for a wide variety of
specialized purposes.
• As we examine the field, we find the term is divided into four
main incarnations:
• Phones
• PDAs
• Pagers
• wireless/Ethernet laptop computers.

Ubiquitous Computing
Pervasive/ Ubiquitous computing
is about the invisible and everywhere (every time)
computing
• Ubiquitous= “seeming to be in all places”
• Pervasive= “present or noticeable in every part of a
thing or place”
• Future State of Computing Technology?
• Mobile, many computers
• Small Processors
• Low Power Consumption
• Relatively Low Cost

11/04/2020 BY ABDELA A.(M. TECH CSE) 23

Ubiquitous Computing

• Temperature
• Light

• Sound
• Motion

• Pressure

• Many others!!!

11/04/2020 BY ABDELA A.(M. TECH CSE) 24

Pervasive computing Example
• A simple example is the automatic adjustment of heating,
cooling and lighting levels in a room based on an occupant’s
profile.
• refrigerators "aware" of their suitably tagged contents, able
to both plan a variety of menus from the food actually on
hand, and warn users of stale or spoiled food.
Characterized by :
Context Awareness (physical location, physiological state,
emotional state,….. distraction-free)
Ad-hoc Networks

systems )
Smart Sensors, Wearable…

11/04/2020 BY ABDELA A.(M. TECH CSE) 25

Cloud Computing
• Cloud computing provides computation, software, data
access, and storage services that do not require end-user
knowledge of the physical location and configuration of
the system that delivers the services.”
• Cloud computing characteristics:
• Agility,
• Reduced Cost,
• Device Location Independence,
• On-demand Scalability And
• Performance
