Problem Solving

Concept Check
• When a plasticizer is added to a polymer, Tg
of the polymer is decreased. Briefly describe
why?

Dr. Saima Shabbir, MSE, IST

Concept Check
• Consider the series of polymers and rank in
the order of lowest to highest Tg. Justify your
ranking?

Dr. Saima Shabbir, MSE, IST

Concept Check
• What is the functionality of the following monomer
in polymerization processes i-iv:
• in a free radical or addition reaction,
• in a reaction that produces amide linkages,
• in a reaction that produces ester linkages,
• in a reaction that produces urethane linkages.

• (i) 4,
• (ii) 2,
• (iii) 1,
• (iv) 0.

Concept Check
• List the two molecular characteristics that
are essential for elastomers.
• (1) they must be amorphous, having chains
that are extensively coiled and kinked in the
unstressed state; and
• (2) there must be some crosslinking

Dr. Saima Shabbir, MSE, IST

Concept Check
• Two diols given below are commercially available at low cost:
• Ethylene glycol (HO-CH2-CH2-OH repeat units) and
• Bisphenol-A (HO-Ph-C(CH3)2-Ph-OH repeat units)
• Which would you choose for a polyester sample to generate:
• Transparency?
• The highest possible glass transition temperature (T g)?
• Ethylene glycol provides a relatively flexible main chain in comparison
to bisphenol-A. This will tend to improve the material’s ability to
crystallize. Choose bulky bisphenol-A for better transparency.
• Stiffer chains produce polymers of higher Tg. Choose bisphenol-A in
order to maximize Tg.

Concept Check
• Using the appropriate letters, draw schematic
structures for the copolymer based on its
concise name:
• Block-copoly[alt-co(propylene/methyl
methacrylate)/graft-co-(propylene/styrene)].
• Where: P = propylene, M = methyl
methacrylate, S = styrene.

Concept Check
• Kevlar and Nomex are high performance
polymers.
• Draw the structures of repeat units for
Nomex and Kevlar?
• Kevlar all para oriented aromatic polyamide

• Nomex all meta oriented aromatic polyamide

Dr. Saima Shabbir, MSE, IST

Concept Check
• Using the structure of polymers differentiate between
Nylon and Aramid?

• Bothe Nylon and Aramid have the same amide linkage

present in their polymers chains. If the space in the
above structure is aliphatic group then it is Nylon and if
the empty space of above structure is an aromatic ring
then it is called Aramid.

Dr. Saima Shabbir, MSE, IST

Concept Check
• Why Nylon and Aramid be spun into fibres,
explain with diagram?
• Nylon and Aramid can be spun into fibres due
to Hydrogen bonding between carbonyl
oxygens and amide hydrogens of different
polymer chains. This allows chain to align in
orderly fashion to form fibres.

Dr. Saima Shabbir, MSE, IST

Concept Check
• Name the following polymers:
• −[−NH−(CH2)6−NH−CO−(CH2)10−CO−]n−

O O H2 H2
C C O C C O
n

• −[−NH-(CH2)3-CO−]n−
• −[−NH-(CH2)5-CO−]n−
• Nylon 6,12
• PET
• Nylon 4
• Nylon 6

Dr. Saima Shabbir, MSE, IST

Concept Check
• For each of the following polymers: identify the type
of polymerization, draw the structure of monomer
and repeat unit.
• Buna-S
• Buna-N
• Teflon
• CF2=CF2  -CF2-CF2-
• Neoprene
• PMMA
• PVAc
• PVDF
