MUSIC 7 UNIT II
FOLK MUSIC OF THECORDILLERA
HIGHLANDS
• In the Cordillera Mountains in the northern part of Luzon, there still live folks,
Like the Kalingas, Ifugaos, Igorot’s, and Bontocs, who have preserved their tribal
identity. Although these folks have constantly received exposure to the more
Westernized culture of the lowland people, they still enjoy a great degree of
authenticity on their unique culture and tradition, particularly their music.
• Among these people may be found some of the most authentic songs that are
expressions of worship, songs to celebrate triumph, thanksgiving, marriages,
and songs to fight disease, hunger, etc. Among these are melismatic chants
used in rituals, long epic songs during festival, and other tribal chants
connected to their beliefs.

make their music unique. The vocal style used in each song varies according to
the activities from day to day.
