Basketball is a team sport where two teams of five players each try to score points by shooting a ball through a hoop mounted at each end of a rectangular court. The objective is to outscore the opposing team while following rules like only being allowed to take a certain number of steps without dribbling the ball. Players can score two or three points depending on whether the shot is taken inside or outside the three-point line. Fouls and violations are penalized according to official rules to ensure fair play. Basketball has evolved specialized techniques and player positions to compete at a high level.
