Construction of Drainage System: Purok 3-A, Brgy. 25-C, Poblacion District

The document summarizes the construction of a drainage system in Purok 3-A, Brgy. 25-C, Poblacion District. The existing drainage system was clogged and emitting foul odors due to waste buildup. This caused flooding during heavy rains. In response, the city government conducted a survey and planned to widen and deepen the drainage system with a removable concrete cover to address the odor issues. The improved drainage system will allow waste to be disposed of in the main sewer system, preventing future clogging.

CONSTRUCTION

OF DRAINAGE
SYSTEM
PUROK 3-A, BRGY. 25-C, POBLACION DISTRICT
BACKGROUND OF THE PROJECT
■ Drainage is the method of removing surface or sub-surface
water from a given area. Drainage systems include all of the
piping within a private or public property that conveys sewage,
rainwater, and other liquid waste to a point of disposal. The
main objective of a drainage system is to collect and remove
waste matter systematically to maintain healthy conditions in a
building. Drainage systems are designed to dispose of
wastewater as quickly as possible and should prevent gases
from sewers and septic tanks from entering residential areas.
■ The reports from the people inside the community of Purok 3-A, Brgy 25-c, Poblacion
Davao City is that their drainage systems emit a foul odor from the trashes, waste water
and other materials that are congested because an existing drainage system does not
have the proper outflow to quickly dispose all the various waste materials. The clogging
of wastes produces an odor that causes variety of health problems for the people inside
that community. This clogged drainage system also causes floods whenever heavy rain
water poured. After the reports, the city Government of Davao City responded quickly
to the concerns of the residents. The City Engineers Office conducted a survey in which
they made a plan to widen and deepen the existing drainage system while putting a
removable concrete cover to cloak the smell of waste materials. The plan of widening
and deepening of this drainage system can now dispose the waste materials collected
from the community of that area to the main public sewer system to prevent any
cloggage in the future.

FINDINGS AND RECOMMENDATION
One of the most important factors in building a road is drainage.
If every other aspect of the road design and construction is carried
out properly but the road drainage is not well planned, designed
and constructed, the road structure will inevitably lead to a
premature failure.
Erosion control is an integral part of road drainage. Excessive
erosion may plug culverts leading to saturations of the road
pavement structure and failure of drainage systems, and finally
leading to the pavement failure.
Unpaved roads are extremely vulnerable to floods. After heavy rain or
storms, drains present outdoors are blocked by the leaves, and dirt, etc.
that cause the drains to block. Blockage of drainage systems is a
common issue faced by people as they are not made to manage large
volumes of water. Therefore, this may lead to flooding outside the
property. Another major cause of blocked drains is a broken pipe. For
water to flow freely, it needs a perfect pipe, or else it may collapse.
The main reasons for this are the poor installation of pipes, and tree
roots. Tree roots cause high damage underground and might be
difficult to investigate where the blockage is. It can be very costly.
Looking at all these problems, it triggers in our minds that we should
undergo regular checks to avoid costly problems. Therefore, make a
practice of calling the plumber on a regular basis. This will incur some
costs in the short run but will save you from bigger in the long run.
