CSEC Biology Introduction - Lesson 1

This document provides an introduction to CSEC Biology, covering the characteristics and classification of living organisms. It discusses the key characteristics of living things, including nutrition, respiration, movement, growth, reproduction, excretion, and sensitivity to the environment. It also describes hierarchical classification and how organisms are grouped from the largest to smallest taxonomical levels based on structural similarities. Examples of classification activities are provided to have students identify and group invertebrate organisms.

CSEC Biology

Introduction: Characterizing and Classifying Living Organisms

By: Shanelle Mooteeram and Arianna Ramjattan

Introduction
Living organisms and environment: How do they
relate to each other?
 Welcome to CSEC Biology,
where we will be covering
fundamental biological
principles and concepts based
on practical and theoretical
knowledge of living organisms
and the environment. Life processes and Disease: How does it
work? What causes disease?
 The main topics to be covered
are:

Continuity and Variation: What causes variation?

Characteristics Nutrition
of Living
Organisms Respiration

Movement

Excretion

Growth

Reproduction

Sensitivity to environmental conditions

Characteristics of Living Organisms
 Nutrition: Organisms obtain energy and raw materials from nutrients such as proteins, carbohydrates and
fats.
 Respiration: the release of energy from food substances in all living cells. Living things break down food
within their cells to release energy for carrying out the following processes.
 Excretion: the removal of toxic materials, the waste products of metabolism and substances in excess
from the body of an organism.
 Movement: changing place or position
 Growth: utilizing nutrients for the production f new cells
 Reproduction: the production of offspring/ passing on genetic information to the next generation
 Sensitivity to the environment: response to stimuli (light, temperature, water, gravity, chemical
substances.
Classification of Living Organisms

 Classification refers to the grouping of organisms based on structural similarities.

 Classification imposes order on the vast diversity of living things.
 Benefits
 Aids in the discovery of new organisms
 Easier for the analysis of data
 Scientific research
 Hierarchical classification is a type of classification where broader features are used to put
organisms into kingdoms, which are the largest groups of organisms. When you move
down towards the species, which are the smallest groups of organisms, features are become
more specific.
Classification of Living Organisms:
Hierarchical Classification
SCENARIO #1

In your backyard, you observe two

insects, one on flower and the other
on the ground. What characteristics
would look at to distinguish between
both these organisms?
For example: Number of legs, wings
or no wings, etc.
SCENARIO #2

 All living organisms must

possess certain characteristics,
look at a car and a baby, why is a
car not a living organism based
on the necessary characteristics?
 As a science student, you’re exploring a tree outside and
notice a caterpillar forming a cocoon, a few days later you
observe a butterfly exiting the cocoon. Identify what
characteristic of a living organism does this demonstrate?
 A)Movement
 B)Reproduction
 C)Sensitivity SCENARIO #3
 D)Growth
 E)Respiration
 F)Excretion
 G)Nutrition
ACTIVITY

 Collect small invertebrate

animals, approximately 5, and
look for features that are similar
and different. Use the information
collected to identify/group the
organisms.
 Example of Invertebrates:

CONT’D
 A flow chart can be used for
grouping of organisms.

SUMMARY

 Organisms are characterized based on their nutrition, respiration, movement, growth,

reproduction, excretion and sensitivity to environment (water availability, light etc.)
 Classification refers to the grouping of organisms based on similarities
 Hierarchical classification is most commonly used, where organisms are grouped from
largest to smallest (kingdom  species)
 Benefits of classifying organisms include giving order to the vast diversity of organisms on
earth
