Avr Controls - Stability Adjustment: Newage Product Training

The document discusses adjusting the stability settings on an automatic voltage regulator (AVR) to achieve optimal response for different generator sizes. It explains that the stability selection link or switch on the AVR needs to be set according to the generator's kilowatt rating to match the generator's time constant, which increases with size. Stability links for various AVR types are positioned differently depending on the generator size in kilowatts. The stability control can also be adjusted to optimize the AVR's response to rapid load changes by running the generator without load and adjusting the stability setting clockwise until the voltage becomes stable.

AVR CONTROLS - STABILITY ADJUSTMENT

SELECTION OF STABILITY SETTINGS FOR OPTIMUM RESPONSE

 Before adjusting the stability control, the Stability selection

link or switch on the AVR should be adjusted to the correct
position.

 This circuit must be set to match the Kwatt rating of the

Generator.

 The stability link or selection switch sets the AVR

stability/response circuit to match the time constant of the
generator, which becomes slower as the generator size
increases.

 NOTE : The SX460 AVR does not have stability links.

ZERO LOAD LOAD APPLIED ON LOAD

 Typical response time for all AVR’s is return to 97% of nominal volts within 300ms.

 Voltage DIP is determined by the ability of the Generator to respond to transient

load current, (GENERATOR REACTANCES). Motor starting requirements and block
loading must be calculated to achieve required VOLTAGE DIP levels.
 The AVR STABILITY CONTROL should also be adjusted to optimise the AVR
transient response to rapid load changes, including motor starting.
