Problem/ Issued Based Learning: Prepared By: Pepito Jaqueca

Problem/issue-based learning focuses on hands-on, self-directed learning through investigating essential questions rather than memorizing facts. Students work cooperatively in groups to research problems, develop potential solutions, and present their findings. The teacher guides students and ensures they determine what is already known about the problem, identify knowledge gaps, conduct independent research, and ultimately develop an appropriate solution to share with the class.

PROBLEM/ ISSUED BASED LEARNING

PREPARED BY: PEPITO JAQUECA

WHAT IS
PROBLEM/
ISSUED BASED
LEARNING
A question that
guides an
investigation, hands-
on learning
experiences, and a
solution to the
question in the form
of a presentation.
• Focuses on students
learning in a hands-on way
instead of memorizing
facts.
• use high-level thinking
skills, which require them
to analyze, create, defend,
or evaluate.
• Students are socially
active and learn to work as
part of a group, asking and
answering questions and
supporting others'
thoughts.
• The model
naturally lends
itself to inter-
curricular lessons.

COMPONENTS OF
PROBLEM/ISSUED
BASED LEARNING
All learning experiences
with PBL begin with
an essential question.
This question is one that
doesn't have a right
answer and needs deep
understanding of content
to be answered.
Learning is self-directed,
meaning students are
responsible for finding a
solution to the problem.
Students work in cooperative
groups to find a solution.
The team of students presents
their findings, called
a culminating project, to the
class.
Teachers are active in PBL,
guiding students through their
research and providing support.
Students must determine
what they already know
about the problem, list
possible solutions and then
complete research to
determine the appropriate
solution. In a science class
students use knowledge of
local habitats and regions to
determine why an animal is
becoming extinct.
PROBLEM/ISSUED
BASED LEARNING
HOW
• Students are presented
with a problem.
• Students reason through a
problem.
• Generate hypothesis
• Identify what they know
and what they need to
know.
• Search for the information
needed (self-directed study)
• Share what have they
learned with the group.
• Assess their progress
until they resolve the
problem.
• Summarize their
learning
• Student present their
solution and learning.
