Basic Principles of Graphics and
Layout
Graphic Design
is the process of visual communication and problem-solving
through the use of typography, photography, iconography
and illustration.
Layout
is the process of planning and arranging graphics or text in
a page or book. A good layout should have a balanced and
alignment of elements.
“There are three responses to a piece of design — yes,
no, and WOW! Wow is the one to aim for.” — Milton
Glaser
1. Balance
Balance lends stability and structure to an overall design.
1. Symmetrical
a layout may be symmetrical where there is equal weight of
elements on both sides of the page.
2. Asymmetrical
a layout may be asymmetrical where there is an artistic and
different intensity on one side of the page.
2. Text
the text type should be legible, appropriate font face, and
arranged either left, right, center or justified. The flow of the text
and picture should be easy to read.

3. Proximity
Proximity helps in creating a relationship between similar
or related elements.
4. Alignment
It gives an ordered appearance to images, shapes, and
blocks of texts by eliminating elements placed in a
dishevelled manner.
5. Visual Hierarchy
a hierarchy is formed when extra visual weight is given to the
most important element or message in your design.
5. Visual Hierarchy
6. Repetition
It creates a rhythm and strengthens the overall design by tying
together consistent elements such as logo and color palette,
making the brand or design instantly recognizable to viewers.
7. Contrast
The most common types of contrast are dark vs. light,
contemporary vs. old-fashioned, large vs. small, etc. Contrast
guides a viewer’s attention to the key elements, ensuring each
side is legible.
7. Contrast
8. Color
Color is an important design basic and it dictates the overall
mood of a design.
9. Negative Space
may be most evident when the space around a subject, not the
subject itself, forms an interesting or artistically relevant shape,
and such space occasionally is used to artistic effect as the "real"
subject of an image.
“Words have meaning, type has spirit,” — Paula Scher.
10. Typography
Typography is one of the key pillars of design, and it speaks
volumes about a brand or an artwork when executed stylistically
or even customised. Sometimes, ‘type’ is all you need to
showcase your design concept.
