Sports)
AIKIDO
◦ Aikido is a modern Japanese martial art developed by Morihei Ueshiba as a
synthesis of his martial studies, philosophy and religious beliefs.
◦ Ueshiba's goal was to create an art that practitioners could use to defend
themselves while also protecting their attackers from injury.
◦ Aikido is often translated as "the way of unifying (with) life energy“ or as "the
way of harmonious spirit".
◦ According to the founder's philosophy, the primary goal in the practice of
aikido is to overcome oneself instead of cultivating violence or aggressiveness.
◦ Morihei Ueshiba used the phrase "masakatsu agatsu katsuhayabi"
◦ ("true victory, final victory over oneself, here and now") to refer to this principle

◦ Aikido's fundamental principles include: irimi (entering), atemi, kokyu-ho (breathing

control), sankaku-ho (triangular principle) and tenkan (turning) movements that redirect
the opponent's attack momentum.

◦ Its curriculum comprises various techniques, primarily throws and joint locks. It also

includes a weapons system encompassing the bokken, tantō and jō.

◦ Aikido derives mainly from the martial art of Daitō-ryū Aiki-jūjutsu, but began to
diverge from it in the late 1920s, partly due to Ueshiba's involvement with the Ōmoto-
kyō religion. Ueshiba's early students' documents bear the term aiki-jūjutsu.
Etymology and Basic Philosophy

The word "aikido" is formed of

three kanji:
◦合 –  ai – harmony, unifying
◦気 –  ki – energy, spirit
◦道 –  dō – way, path
History
◦ Aikido was created by Morihei Ueshiba ( 植芝 盛平  Ueshiba
Morihei, 1883–1969), referred to by some aikido practitioners
as Ōsensei (Great Teacher.
◦ The term aikido was coined in the twentieth century.
◦ Ueshiba envisioned aikido not only as the synthesis of his martial
training, but as an expression of his personal philosophy of
universal peace and reconciliation.
◦ During Ueshiba's lifetime and continuing today, aikido has evolved
from the aiki that Ueshiba studied into a variety of expressions by
martial artists throughout the world
Fitness

◦ Physical training goals pursued in conjunction with aikido include

controlled relaxation, correct movement of joints such as hips and
shoulders, flexibility, and endurance, with less emphasis
on strength training.

◦ In aikido, pushing or extending movements are much more

common than pulling or contracting movements.
◦ This distinction can be applied to general fitness goals for the aikido
practitioner.

ARNIS
◦ Arnis, also known as Kali or Eskrima/Escrima, is the national martial
art of the Philippines.

◦ The three are roughly interchangeable umbrella terms for the

traditional martial arts of the Philippines ("Filipino Martial Arts", or FMA),
which emphasize weapon-based fighting with sticks, knives, bladed
weapons, and various improvised weapons, as well as "open hand"
techniques without weapons.
Name

◦ Arnis comes from arnés,[ Old Spanish for "armor" (harness is an archaic English

term for armor, which comes from the same roots as the Spanish term).
◦ It is said to derive from the armor costumes used in Moro-moro stage plays where
actors fought mock battles using wooden swords.
◦  Arnes is also an archaic Spanish term for weapon, like in the following sentence
from Ilustración de la Destreza Indiana by Francisco Santos de la Paz in 1712
◦ Eskrima (also spelled Escrima/Eskrima) is a Filipinization of the Spanish word
for fencing, esgrima.
◦ Their cognate in French is escrime and is related to the English term 'skirmish'.
◦ Kali has multiple theories on its origin
Cont…
◦ Practitioners of the arts are called arnisador (male, plural arnisadores)
and arnisadora (female, plural arnisadoras) for those who call
theirs arnis, eskrimador (male, plural eskrimadores)
or eskrimadora (female, plural eskrimadoras) for those who call their
art eskrima, and kalista or mangangali for those who practise kali.

◦ It is also known as Estoque (Spanish for rapier), Estocada (Spanish for

thrust or stab) and Garrote (Spanish for club). In Luzon it may go by the
name of Arnis de Mano.
