WHY IS IT IMPORTANT TO QUESTION THE MORAL
AND ETHICAL ISSUES SURROUNDING INNOVATIONS
IN SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY?
Innovation in science and technology is driven by the need of people to better their society
and way of living. However, this need pushes people to create new methods, products, or
ideas that could be a disadvantage at certain instances. Morality and ethics ground innovators
to ensure that their creations do not violate any form of human rights. Taking as an example
the invention of GoogleClips, the creators did not think through how this small device
greatly violates the privacy of people. If the camera is set up somewhere with a lot of people
and the camera decides to take a photo of that moment, the privacy of those unaware people
is violated. The concern here is that the owner of the camera do not intend for this to happen.
However, being that this person is the one who handles the camera, s/he is the one
accountable for this action.
IN THE FACE OF THIS
DILEMMA, WHY IS IT
IMPORTANT TO STUDY STS?
This ethical dilemma substantiates the importance of understanding
science, technology, and society separately and collectively. Being well-
informed of this allows the awareness of how to ethically deal with this
perplexing situation. GoogleClips is a scientific and technological
innovation that brings a huge impact to the society. Although the intent
of being able to capture the most genuine moments, it does not
overshadow the fact that this device could violate privacy.
Understanding the interrelation of science, technology, and society
highlights the significance of not just innovating what is feasible, but
actually considering what is moral and ethical.
