Classical Probability Grade 10

The document discusses key concepts of probability including classical probability. It provides examples of calculating probability using counting techniques and definitions such as sample space. Probability is a number between 0 and 1, and the probabilities of all outcomes sum to 1. Tree diagrams can visually represent sample spaces. Classical probability uses equal odds to calculate probability as the number of favorable outcomes over total possible outcomes. Examples demonstrate calculating probability of rolling dice, drawing cards and playing rock paper scissors.

OBJECTIVES
▪ Demonstrate understanding of the key
concepts of probability.
▪ Use precise counting technique and
probability in formulating conclusions
and making decisions.
Probability
▪ Branch of mathematics that describes chance
outcome.
▪ Branch of mathematics concerned with the study
of randomness and uncertainty.
Probability Rules
 Any Probability is a number between zero and one.
0≤P(A)≤1
 The sum of the probabilities of all of the outcomes is
one.
P(S) = 1
 The probability that an event does not occur is one
minus the probability that an event does occur.
P(not A)=1−P(A)
Sample Space
Set of all possible outcomes in an experiment.
examples:

Experiment: Rolling a die Experiment: Tossing a coin

Sample Space : {1,2,3,4,5,6} Sample size: {Heads, Tails}
Tree Diagram
In probability it may be used as visual
representation of the sample space.
example:
Tossing a coin twice.

Classical Probability
Classical probability is a simple form of probability
that has equal odds of something happening.

# of outcomes of event A
P(A) =
# of all possible outcome
Example 1
Given a die, find the probability that you will get an
even number if you roll a die once.
Event A = {2,4,6} = 3
Sample Space = {1,2,3,4,5,6} = 6
3 1
P(A) = =
6 2

The probability of getting an even number in a

roll of a die is .50 or 50%
Example 2
A pen holder contains 2 blue, 5 green and 5 pink
pens. What is the probability of getting a pen that is
color blue?
Event A =2
Sample Space = 2+5+5= 12
2 1
P(A) = =
12 6
The probability of getting a blue pen in the
pen holder is .1667 or 16.67%
PRACTICE!
Given a standard deck of card, what is the
probability of drawing an honor card?
Event A = 5*4 = 20
Sample Space = 52
20 5
P(A) = =
52 13

The probability of drawing an honor card in a

standard deck of card is .3846 or 38.46%
Gon and Killua are playing rock, paper, scissors, what is the
probability that Gon will win the game?

Event A = win = 1
Sample Space = {win, lose, draw} = 3

1
P(A) =
3
The probability that Gon will win the game is .
3333 or 33.33%
Seatwork
Please solve the following probability problems.

1. Determine the probability that a digit chosen at random

from the digits 1, 2, 3, …12 will be odd.

2. Given a box with 4 blue balls, 7 green balls and 1 yellow

balls, what is the probability of obtaining a ball that is
color blue?

3. A coin is tossed two times, if H = head and T = tail, what

is the probability of the tosses coming up in the order
HT?
