Exercise 2.5
Q. 14 Without actually calculating the cubes, find the value of each of the following:
(i) (-12)3 + (7)3 + (5)3
(ii) (28)3 + (-15)3 +(-13)3

We know that, (ii) (28)3 + (-15)3 + (-13)3

x3 + y3 +z3 – 3xyz = (x +y + z) (x2 + y2 +z2 –xy – yz – zx) Here, x = 28 , y = -15 , z = -13
x3 + y3 +z3 = (x + y + z) (x2 + y2 +z2 –xy – yz – zx) + 3xyz x + y + z = 28 + (-15) + (-13)
Hence, =0
(i) (-12)3 + (7)3 + (5)3 Hence,
Here, x = -12 , y = 7, z = 5 0 * (x2 + y2 +z2 –xy – yz – zx) = 0
x + y + z = (-12) + 7 + 5 Therefore,
=0 (28)3 + (-15)3 + (-13)3 = 0 + 3*(28)(-15)(-13)
Hence, = 5460
0 * (x2 + y2 +z2 –xy – yz – zx) = 0
Therefore,
(-12)3 + (7)3 + (5)3 = 0 + 3*(-12)(7)(5)
= 1260

Q. 1 The cost of a notebook is twice the cost of a pen. Write a linear equation in two variables to represent this statement.

Let,
cost of a notebook = x
cost of a pen = y
Given,
cost of a notebook is twice the cost of a pen
Hence,
x = 2y
x – 2y = 0

Exercise 3.3
Q. 2 Solve 2x + 3y = 11 and 2x - 4y = -24 and hence find the value of ‘m’ for which y = mx + 3

Given, On substituting the value of x and y from (iii) and (iv),

2x + 3y = 11………(i) y = mx + 3
2x – 4y = -24..……(ii)
mx +3 = y
On substracting (ii) from (i),
mx = y – 3
[2x + 3y = 11]
(-2)m = 5 – 3
- [2x – 4y = -24]
0 + 7y = 35 m = 2 / (-2)

y = 35 / 7 m = -1
y = 5……(iii)
On substituting the value of y in equation (i),
2x + 3y = 11
2x + 3(5) = 11
2x + 15 = 11
2x = 11 – 15
2x = -4
x = -4/2
x = -2……(iv)

Exercise 8.1
Q. 3 If sin A = 3 / 4, calculate cos A and tan A.

Given, C cos A = √7 / 4
sin A = 3 / 4 tan A = opposite side
We know that, sin A = opposite side 3k 4k adjacent side
hypotenuse side
tan A = 3k / √7k
Hence, opposite side = 3k unit
A
hypotenuse = 4k unit……k is constant B tan A = 3 / √7
From Pythagoras theorem,
(hypotenuse)2 = (adjacent side)2 + (opposite side)2
adjacent side = (hypotenuse) 2 - (opposite side)2
adjacent side = √[ (4k)2 - (3k)2 ]
adjacent side = √(16k2 – 9k2)
adjacent side = √(7k2)
adjacent side = √7 k
Hence,
cos A = adjacent side
hypotenuse side
cos A = √7 k / 4k

Exercise 15.1
Q. 5 If P(E) = 0.05, what is the probability of ‘not E’

We know that,
P(E) + P(E) = 1
Hence,
P(E) = 1 - P(E)
P(E) = 1 – 0.05
P(E) = 0.95
