Project Work: Rahul Dubey

The document summarizes a B.Tech final year project on finite element modeling and analysis of functionally graded rectangular structures under mechanical loading using ANSYS. A six-layer functionally graded material with varying ceramic and metallic properties was modeled and validated by comparing results to analytical solutions. Various boundary conditions were then analyzed. The document also discusses a previous mini-project involving fabrication of a 12-layer glass fiber composite via hand layup and testing its bending and shear properties.

PROJECT WORK

RAHUL DUBEY
• The B.Tech final year project is on finite element modelling and analysis of functionally graded
rectangular structures under mechanical loading using ANSYS APDL. The motive behind choosing
this method was its simplicity and ease. A six layered FGM material is considered to determine its
frequency under free and forced vibration cases (considered layers varying from ceramic rich to
metallic rich instead of continuous variation, as it is an initial study). The modelling was done and a
validation study was performed first by comparing its results with the analytical solution which
considered a shear deformation theory and sigmoidal power law methods. From the validation
study, it was noted that the obtained results were well matching with available results for the static
analysis. Later, the results have been made for various boundary conditions.
• I am sure my skills of manufacturing composites earned during mini-project will be
helpful for doing a successful MS programme there. I have fabricated glass fibre
composite of 12 layers using glass fibre, epoxy resin, hardener and polyvinyl alcohol by
common hand layup method at room temperature. Then material undergone bending test
under simply supported condition where the load is applied at mid-section of the beam
and deflection is recorded at different lengths of the beam and analysed its mechanical
properties like bending test and shear test.
