Integrals: Integration of Trigonometric Functions

This document discusses integration of trigonometric functions. It provides the differentiation formulas that are used to find the integrals of trig functions. Examples are worked through, finding the integrals of cos x, sin x + cos x, and 3tanx - 2cotx. An activity has students work in pairs to find integrals of given trig functions. The solutions are then shown. More examples of finding integrals of trigonometric functions are provided along with an assignment problem.

INTEGRALS

INTEGRATION OF
TRIGONOMETRIC FUNCTIONS
OBJECTIVE:
• Find the integral of
trigonometric functions.
RECALL!

RECALL AND APPLY!
Differentiation Formula Integration Theorems

(sin x) = cos x +C

(cos x) = -sin x +C

(tan x) = sec2 x +C

(cot x) = -csc2 x +C

(sec x) = sec x tan x +C

(csc x) = -csc x cot x +C

EXAMPLE
•

1. Find the 8 cos x dx.

Solution:
8 cos x dx = 8 cos x dx
= 8 sin x + C
EXAMPLE
•
2. Find the cos x + sin x) dx.
Solution:
cos x + sin x) dx = cos xdx + sin xdx
= sin x + (-cos x) + C
= sin x – cos x +C
EXAMPLE
•
3. Find (3 - 2 ) d
Solution:
= (3 - 2 ) d
=3 dx - 2 d
= 3 dx - 2 d = 3 tan – 2 (-cot ) + C
= 3 tan + 2 cot + C
ACTIVITY: THINK-PAIR SHARE
•Find
a pair. Answer the given problems in finding the integrals of
the ff. (10 minutes)

 1. -12 cos x dx

2. 5 sin x dx
3.
4. sec tan d
5. (2 sin z – 10 cos z + 13 z – 3 ) dz
SOLUTIONS
•1.  -12 cos x dx = -12 cos x dx
= -12 sin x + C

2. 5 sin x dx = 5 sin x dx
= 5 (-cos x) + C
= -5 cos x + C
SOLUTIONS
•3.  = 4
= 4 (-csc y) + C
= -4 csc y + C

4. sec tan d = 9 sec tan d

= -9 sec + C
SOLUTION
•5. (2 sin z – 10 cos z + 13 z – 3 ) dz
= (2 sin z) dz – (10 cos z) dz + (13 z) dz – (3 ) dz
= 2 sin z dz – 10 cos z dz + 13 z dz – 3 dz
= 2 (-cos z) – 10 sin z + 13 tan z – 3 (-cot z) + C
= -2 cos z – 10 sin z + 13 tan z + 3 cot z + C
