Side Pocket Mandrels

• A side pocket mandrel looks like this

Tubing
Basically it is a pocket.
You can put several
items into the pocket.
Like
•Gas Lift Valves
Side Pocket •Orifice
Mandrel
•Dummy
Side Pocket Mandrels
• On it’s own the SPM is useless. It is only
when you fit it with a GLV or ORIFICE or
DUMMY that it is useful.

Inside the SPM contains a

GLV, Orifice or Dummy
• In a completion string you will have several SPMs

SPM with
GLV
Completion fluid

SPM with
GLV

Orifice
• We will set the GLVs to open at specific pressures

SPM with GLV (set

to open at 400psi)
Completion fluid

SPM with GLV (set

to open at 200psi)

Orifice
• First, we will pump gas down the annulus at 500psi. The completion
fluid will drain through the GLV. The fluid travels up through the tubing
until it reaches surface. When the gas finally reaches the port of the
GLV, you will get gas returns at the surface.

500psi Gas

SPM with GLV (set

to open at 400psi)
Pressure greater than Completion fluid
400psi. GLV is open

SPM with GLV (set

to open at 200psi)
Pressure greater than
200psi. GLV is open

Orifice
• When that happens, the pressure of gas pumping in to string reduces to
300psi. That way, the top GLV will close but the bottom GLV is still
open. Fluid will drain through the GLV set at 200psi

300psi Gas

SPM with GLV (set

to open at 400psi)
Pressure less than
400psi. GLV is closed

SPM with GLV (set

to open at 200psi)
Pressure greater than
200psi. GLV is open

Completion fluid

Orifice
• When the gas reaches the lower GLV, the pressure in the
string reduces to 100psi. That way we close the lower GLV.
Now, fluid will drain through the orifice.

100psi Gas

SPM with GLV (set

to open at 400psi)
Pressure less than
300psi. GLV is closed

SPM with GLV (set

to open at 200psi)
Pressure less than
200psi. GLV is closed

Orifice

Completion fluid
• With the 2 GLVs closed, gas will only enter the tubing string
through the orifice. That is the only SPM working during
production.

About the Dummy
The GLV and orifice can be retrieved through the tubing using Slick line.
Sometimes, we put a dummy in the SPM as a back up. It serves no
purpose, except to prevent communication in between the tubing and
annulus.
