Matrix As Defined

This document defines what a matrix is and provides examples. It states that a matrix is a rectangular array of numbers or expressions arranged in rows and columns. Matrices are useful for organizing and presenting data as well as calculations. An example matrix shows tire sales by quarter and brand. The document then formally defines a matrix as having rows, columns, and elements denoted by indices. It explains that the order of a matrix specifies its size as the number of rows by the number of columns.

MATRICES

AND ITS
DEFINITION

ENGR. GLENDA ALEGA – DE MESA

What does a matrix look like?
Matrices are everywhere. If you have used a spreadsheet such as Excel
or Lotus or written a table, you have used a matrix. Matrices make
presentation of numbers clearer and make calculations easier to
program.
Look at the matrix below about the sale of tires in a Blowoutr’us store –
given by quarter and make of tires.
Q1 Q2 Q3 Q4
Tirestone 25 20 3 2 
Michigan  5 10 15 25
 
Copper  6 16 7 27
If one wants to know how many Copper tires were sold in Quarter 3, we go along the
row Copper and column Q3 and find that it is 7.

What is a matrix?
A matrix is a rectangular array of elements arranged in the form of rows
and columns and are set off by parenthesis ( ) or brackets [ ]. The
elements can be symbolic expressions or numbers.
Matrix [A] is denoted by:

 a11 a12 ....... a1n 

a a 22 ....... a 2 n 
[ A]   21
  
 
a m1 am2 ....... a mn 

3
What is a matrix?
Row i of [A] has n elements and is  ai1 ai 2 ....ain 

 a1 j 
and column j of [A] has m elements and is a 
 2j 
 
 
 a mj 
Where:
aij = are the elements of the matrix
m = number of rows
n = number of columns

4
Order of a Matrix

◦ Each matrix has rows and columns and this defines the size of the
matrix.
◦ If a matrix [A] has m rows and n columns, the size or order of the
matrix is denoted by m×n.
◦ The matrix [A] may also be denoted by [A] mxn to show that [A] is a
matrix with m rows and n columns.
◦ Each entry in the matrix is called the entry or element of the matrix
and is denoted by aij where i is the row number and j is the column
number of the element.

5
What is a matrix?

The matrix for the tire sales example could be denoted by the matrix [A]
as:
25 20 3 2 
[ A]   5 10 15 25
 6 16 7 27 

There are 3 rows and 4 columns, so the size of the matrix is 3×4.
In the above [A] matrix, a33 =7.

6
Example: Find the order of the given matrix.

Answer:
Since the matrix has 2
rows(horizontal) and 4
columns (vertical), the
given matrix has an
order of 2 by 4.
