GC/GCMS PROCESS

Gas Chromatography Process
 Gas chromatography (GC) is a common
type of chromatography used in analytical
chemistry for separating and analyzing
compounds that can be vaporized without
decomposition.
 Testing the purity of a particular substance,
or separating the different components of a
mixture (the relative amounts of such
components can also be determined)
 Usually an inert gas such as helium or an
unreactive gas such as nitrogen is injected
to facilitate the “mobile phase”. They are
known as the carrier gas.
 The aliphatic and aromatic fractions are
dissolved in hexane (solvent).
 The GC oven is held at 80 degree Celcius
for 1 minute, and warmed at 4-6 degree
Celcius per minute to about 300 degree
Celcius. This will be held for 20 minutes.
The run time of analysis will be determined
by the programmed analyst.

Gas Chromatography/ Mass Spectrometry Process
 Provide a molecular weight of a compound.
 Able to differentiate mixes of several components that may coelute, but the individual
molecular species must be differ in molecular weight.
 Allows simultaneous analysis of saturated and aromatic hydrocarbons, acid gaseous (CO 2 and
H2S) and inert gases (Nitrogen).

Gas Chromatography/ Mass Spectrometry Process

Metallic filament ionizes each compound by ionizing a small quantity of

material, during which multiple fragments of the molecule may be produced.
