Ausubel'S Meaningful Verbal Learning and Subsumption Theory

Ausubel's theory focuses on how people learn large amounts of meaningful verbal information in educational settings. His theory states that knowledge is organized hierarchically and that new information is best learned when it can be connected to what is already known. Ausubel proposed several processes for meaningful learning, including relating new concepts to existing concepts as subcategories or combining new and old knowledge. He also emphasized the importance of "advance organizers," which provide a framework for incorporating new information into cognitive structures.

AUSUBEL’S

MEANINGFUL
VERBAL LEARNING
AND SUBSUMPTION
THEORY
Ausubel’s theory is concerned with how
individuals learn large amounts of
meaningful material from verbal/textual
presentations in a school setting. The
theme of his theory is that knowledge is
hierarchirally organized, that new
information is meaningful to the extent
that it can be related to what is already
known

theory

FOCUS OF AUSUBEL’S
SUBSUMPTION THEORY
 The most important factor
influencing learning is the quantity,
clarity and organization of the
learner’s present knowledge. This
comprises his/her cognitive structure
 The way to strengthen the student’s
cognitive structure is by using
advance organizers that allow
students to already have a bird’s eye
view to see the “big pictiure” of the
topic to be learned even before going
details
FOUR PROCESS OF FOR A
MEANINGFUL LEARNING
1.Derivative subsumption –this
decribes the situation in which the
new information you learn is an
example of a concept that you have
already learned.
.
2.Correlative subsumption- it is a
process by which new knowledge is
included into concepts already
existing knowledge. Correlative
subsumption takes new
information.
3.Superordinate learning- the
child already knew a lot of
examples of concept, but did not
know the concept itself concept
itself until it was taught to her.
4.Combinatorial learning- this is
when newly aquired knowledge
combines with prior knowledge to
enrich the understanding of both
concepts.
ADVANCE ORGANIZERS
Advance organizer is a major instructional tool
by Ausubel that gives you two benefits:
1. you will find it easier to connect new
information with what you already know
2. you can readily see how the concepts
in a certain topic are related to each other
TYPES OF ADVANCE ORGANIZERS
1. Expository- describes the new content
2. Narrative- presents the new information in
the form of a story to students
3. Skimming- is done by looking over the new
material to gain the basic overview
4. Graphic organizers- visuals to set up or
outline the new information. This may
include photographs, descriptive patterns,
concept patterns and concept maps.
APPLICATION OF PRINCIPLES

 1. The most general ideas should be presented first

anf then progressively diffe;ntiated in terms of detail
and specificity. He called this progressive
deffirention.The purpose of Progressive
Differentiation is to increase the stability and clarity
of anchoring ideas.
 2.Instructional materials should attempt to integrate
new material with previously presented information
through comparisons and cross~referencing of new
and old ideas
