Condenser Waseem

The document discusses different types of condensers. It begins by defining condensation and explaining that a condenser is a device that changes a substance from its gaseous to liquid state by cooling it. It then describes several types of condensers including shell and tube condensers, contact condensers, dehumidifying condensers, water cooled condensers, air cooled condensers, and evaporative condensers. It explains the basic working and applications of each type.

 Condensation Process
 Condenser
 Condensate
 Types of Condenser
 Application
Condensation

 To the changing of the physical state of matter from gaseous phase into liquid
phase, and is the reverse of vaporization.

 Condensation begins at the dew point.

Condenser
 A device or unit used to condense a substance from its gaseous to
its liquid state, by cooling it.
 In so doing, the latent heat is given up by the substance, and will
transfer to the condenser coolant.
Condensate

 The liquid phase produced by the condensation of steam or any other gas

 The product of a chemical condensation reaction other than water

Types Of Condenser

 Shell and tube condenser (Surface condenser)

 Contact condensers
 Dehumidifying condenser
 Water cooled
 Air cooled
 Evaporative Condenser
Shell and tube condenser

 The design of a shell and tube condenser resembles the design of shell and
tube heat exchanger.
 Cooling water used as the cooling medium
 Cooling water flows through the tubes
 Vapors flows through the shell side.
Cont.…
 Selection of which material should pass through tubes cannot be decided by
fixed rules, because of factors at a variance with one another.
 When corrosive condensate is encountered, condensation within the tubes rather
than the shell is usually desirable.
Working
 In most shell and tube condensers the cooling water runs through the tubes and
the liquid that is to be condensed runs through the shell side.
Contact condensers
 A device in which a vapor such as steam is brought into direct contact with
cooling liquid such as water and its condensed by given up its latent heat to the
liquid.
 Contact condensers are classified as jet, barometric and ejector condenser.
Dehumidifying condensers

 A dehumidifier is generally a household appliance which reduces the level

of humidity in the air, usually for health or comfort reasons, or to eliminate
musty odor.
 Large dehumidifiers are also used in commercial buildings such as indoor ice
rinks to control the humidity level.
Water cooled Condenser

 These condensers are the more efficient type.

 Commonly used for swimming pools and condensers piped for city water flow,
these condensers require regular service and maintenance.
 They also require a cooling tower to conserve water.
 Depending on the application you can choose from tube in tube, shell and coil or
shell and tube condensers.
All are essentially made to produce the same outcome, but each in a different way.
Air cooled Condenser

 If the condenser is located on the outside of the unit, the air cooled condenser
can provide the easiest arrangement.
 These types of condensers eject heat to the outdoors and are simple to install.
 Most common uses for this condenser are domestic refrigerators, upright
freezers and in residential packaged air conditioning units.
 A great feature of the air cooled condenser is they are very easy to clean.
 Since dirt can cause serious issues with the condensers performance, it is highly
recommended that these be kept clear of dirt.
Evaporative Condenser

 Evaporative condensers can be used inside or outside of a building and under

typical conditions, operate at a low condensing temperature.
 Typically these are used in large commercial air conditioning units.
 Although effective, they are not necessarily the most efficient.
 Prior to beginning your install, make sure you choose a condenser that will
provide you with the most efficient use.
Applications
 Cooling towers
 Refrigerators
 Air conditioning
 Freezers
