TITLE:
Artisan haat/ centre for enhancement and preservation of handicraft

TITLE JUSTIFICATION
The term artisan haat means bazar for artisans,It provides oppurtunities for the artisans themselves to market
their products, meet their fellow artisans and understand the contemporary needs and thus ensuring the
conservation of arts and crafts.to create an environment for rural markets with which the artisans would feel
comfortable and the visitors get a new experience.

OBJECTIVES:
• Social
• An interaction place for craftsmen.
• To provide a good working environment for the creation, workshop, exhibition and presentation.
• To fulfill the solitude environment required by artists and craftsmen, coherent with their way of living and working style.
• As a socialization ground for craftsmen.
Cultural
 To promote kerala culture through crafts.
 A cultural center that justifies the kerala lifestyle.
 To blend with the culture of different generations.

Physical
 To provide an adequate, controlled and ideal environment for craftsmen.
 To promote kerala handicraft, both within inside and outside kerala
 To provide space for seminars and exhibitions, for exchange of their views and ideas.
 To create a new attraction for tourist.

Economical objectives
 To enable people to understand the relationship between economics, culture and aesthetics
 The place maybe developed as a part of tourist spots in the Kathmandu Valley that would in turn help in generating certain revenue
 Addition of employment.
NEED FOR THE PROJECT
PRESENT STATUS OF HANDICRAFT (source:HDCK)  

•VOLUME OF BUSINESS Total business of handicraft is estimated to at 6.87 billion rupees.  

•REVENUE TO GOVERNMENT Tax collected for handicraft is 3% .

 •NUMBER OF FAMILY ENGAGED Population census 2017 has a population of craft workers to the tune of 1 million.
 
•WORKING ENVIRONMENT As most of the handicraft production is done in household scale, the working condition is not ideal. In
urban areas, space at household scale is felt inadequate to expand product
 
•HANDICRAFT INDUSTRY’S PROBLEMS  Due to lower scale of economy, handicraft industry faces the problem of low productivity,
high cost of production, inconsistent quality and inadequate volume of production. Each product has their own specific problems too. Absence
of proper infrastructure has been major problem in the areas of production, processing and marketing of handicraft goods.
 
•CONTRIBUTION IN THE EMPLOYMENT Handicraft sector contributes around 9% in the total employment of the country. Moreover,
it has been a solid base for self employment

WHY KOCHI ?
 

KOCHI BIENNALE
 
 The Kochi Biennale Foundation is based in Fort Kochi. They work year-round to promote and give a
platform to contemporary art, both local and international!
 
 Every two years, the Kochi-Muziris Biennale brings people from all over to the world, and the entire
city is transformed into a living, breathing art exhibition, filled with work by artists both local and
international.
  
 
 In fact, the Biennale is something that the city is famous for, and is said to be one of the best in the
entire world! It draws in more than 2, 50,000 people and is the reason that Fort Kochi is now on the
map for cultural significance.
 
KERALA KATHAKALI CENTRE

 Arguably one of the last proper theatres for the Kerala art of Kathakali, and the most popular in Kochi, artistes of the centre
perform every night for 365 days a year! Not only that, but the artists usually allow people to watch the application of the make-up,
before the show.
 
 Frequented by locals and tourists alike, the centre is a tribute to one of the oldest forms of entertainment in Kerala. The centre also
showcases Kalaripayattu performances and offers classes in yoga and meditation.
 
Due to biennale and the kathakali centre present in fort kochi, the no of tourists attracted to arts and crafts will be more. So fort kochi
will be the best place for an urban haat in kerala.
