Evaluating Functions: Objective

The document discusses evaluating functions. It defines functions as relations where each input has exactly one output. It provides examples of functions and non-functions. It explains that to evaluate a function, you replace the variable with a given number and apply the same rules as evaluating expressions, such as order of operations. The document provides examples of evaluating different types of functions by substituting values for variables and simplifying.

Evaluating Functions

Objective:
I can evaluate functions.
Definitions
Relation A relationship between sets of
information. Typically between inputs
and outputs.

Function A relation such that there is no more

than one output for each input
Examples of Functions
X Y
10 2
X Y 15 -5
-3 1 18 -5
-1 0 20 1
0 4 7 -5

Examples of Non-Functions

1 -3

Function Notation

The f is the name of the function machine and the

value inside the parentheses is the input. The
expression to the right of the equal sign shows
what the machine does to the input.

Evaluating Functions
Evaluating a function is similar to evaluating an expression

To evaluate a function, replace the variable with a given number.

Important Rules to remember:

Exponents – Squaring a negative

Adding and Subtracting Integers
Order of Operations
Adding and Subtracting Integers

Use the following function rule to find g(-5).

g(x) = 6 – x
Adding and Subtracting Integers

Use the following function rule to find g(-4).

g(x) = -3 + x
Order of Operations

Use the following function rule to find f(-10).

f(x) =
Example
If f(x) = 2x + 3, find f(5).

f  5  2  5  3
When evaluating,
do not write f(x)!
f  5   10  3
You want x=5 since
f(x) was changed to
f(5)
You wanted to

f  5   13
find f(5). So the
complete final
answer includes
f(5) not f(x)
Solving v. Evaluating
If f  x    23 x  3, complete the following:
No equal sign Equal sign

a. Evaluate f  3 b. Find x if f  x   5
Substitute and Evaluate Solve for x
The input (or x) is 3. The output is -5.

 23  3  3 5   23 x  3

2  3 8   23 x
