Session 1 Work Study and Ergonomics Method Study Part 1

The document discusses method study, which is a component of work study that analyzes jobs to determine standard and more effective methods. It defines method study and outlines its scope, including developing methods that require less effort but are safer, faster, and more economical. This leads to benefits like higher productivity, efficiency, and machine utilization. The document also discusses time study, another work study component that determines standard times for jobs. Setting standard times allows for estimating resources and costs needed for production planning and decision-making. Finally, the basic steps of conducting a method study are provided.

Work Study
Definition: Work Study is a field under industrial engineering which deals with the
analysis of a job (task/operation/process etc.) for determining a preferred (standard)
method of doing it and also determining the standard time to perform it by the
preferred/standard (or given) method.
Fields under Work Study: There are two main areas under work study. These include
(i)Method Study (Motion Study/Work Method Design), and
(ii)Time Study (Work Measurement).
Method Study defined
‘Method Study’ is a field under ‘Work Study’ which deals with the analysis of a job
(task/operation/process etc.) for determining a preferred/better (standard) method of
doing it. ‘Method Study’ involves systematic recording, analysis, and critical
examination of existing/proposed method of doing work for the purpose of
development and application of easier and more effective method. (Method Study
improves methods of production)

Work Study
Scope of Method Study: The main aim of ‘Method Study’ is to provide the best
method of doing a job resulting in optimal utilization of firm’s resources. The
concept of method study applies to both, existing as well as new jobs. The main
objective is that work is performed in a well-organized manner such that it

 requires less human effort

 is safe to perform by the workforce
 results in shorter manufacturing lead times
 is economical
Thus it results in following:

(a) Higher workforce effectiveness

(b) Higher machine utilization
(c) Economical use of materials

Time Study
The main aim of Time Study is to determine the standard time of a given job i.e. time
required to complete the job by a normal worker by the preferred/standard method.
Standard times for different jobs are necessary for proper estimation of following for
a given future period:

 Manpower requirements
 Machine requirements
 Materials requirements
Production cost per unit. This helps in making ‘make’ or ‘buy’ decisions (is it
economical to manufacture a given item in-house [make decision] or to
purchase it from an external vendor/supplier [buy decision])
 Labor budgets
 Workers performance and formulation of incentive plans

Thus, it can be seen that WORK STUDY (comprising of method study and time study) results
in increased quality, lower costs, and improved productivity.

Steps in Method Study
Method Study Procedure: The following general steps describe the
procedure for conducting a method study.
1. Select the job/task for which method study is to be conducted.
2. Collect and Record information.
3. Examine the information critically.
4. Develop the most practical, economical and effective method by
considering real limitations of the situation.
5. Install the new method as standard practice.
6. Maintain the standard practice by regular follow up.
