Introduction
• Ethics starts at the top, with small and big companies. If owners and
executives are not perceived as trustworthy and are low in morals,
employees will follow suit and will lack ethics too. Any ethics policy
should include owners and executives, or it will be useless. If employees
see owners skirting the law and lying to save a few dollars, they will
perceive that as appropriate behavior. Business ethics involves everyone
in a company and is an worthwhile endeavor. If a customer is scammed
once, he will not go back to that firm. Without ethics, a business is not
likely to survive long.
Significance

• The main goal of developing ethical policies is to build a good reputation.

People prefer to do business with reputable firms, not those that conduct
themselves dishonestly, taking advantage of them. A good reputation is a
business's best asset and should be protected. No investor or customer
wants to deal with a firm that is plagued by scandals. It's hard, if not
impossible, to regain trust and reputation once that is lost. Ethical policies
help in keeping all employees and owners of a company in-line.
Code of Ethics
• A company's code of ethics gives employees guidance on business matters,
including those of the board of directors and executive officers. Dow Jones
own code of ethics states, "The central premise of this code is that Dow Jones'
reputation for quality products and services, for business integrity, and for the
independence and integrity of our publications, services and products is the
heart and soul of our enterprise. Put another way, it is an essential prerequisite
for success in the news and information business that our customers believe us
to be telling them the truth. If we are not telling them the truth—or even if they,
for any valid reason, believe that we are not—then Dow Jones cannot prosper. "
Benefits
• Policies on ethical behavior help run a business by giving employees
concrete ideas about what is right and what is not accepted in the
workplace, without the need for constant management presence to
supervise them. Ethical policies are guidelines for all employees of a
company to do the right thing and behave at high standards at all times.
Good ethical policies create a good culture based on trust and
transparency. They promote moral conduct, and they benefit customers as
well, as happy employees develop happy customers who keep coming
back.
The importance of ethics training programs

• Ethics trainings are essential to preserving a positive business culture and

responsive to any ethical dilemmas that could arise. Communicating
ethical business behavior and implementing that behavior into the
workplace is an important business strategy that can only improve a
business. By having these programs in place and updating them when
necessary, companies will flourish and grow into a thriving and respected
business for years to come.
Benefits of an Ethical Workplace:
• • Gives employees a foundation during times of change. In today’s business environment where change is
constant and senior management can be a revolving door, attention to business ethics makes people
consciously decide how they want to/should behave.

• • Cultivates teamwork and productivity. Ongoing discussions about business ethics builds trust, openness
and, community—important ingredients of effective teams in the workplace.

• • Creates greater consistency in standards and quality of products and services offered by the organization.
There will likely be more satisfied customers when they know they can have confidence in the quality of
the product/service and how it is offered/delivered. And employee satisfaction will be higher, thus reducing
turnover, lawsuits, etc.
The Importance of Ethics in Organizations

• Builds a Positive Corporate Culture

• Boosts Consumer Confidence
• Reduces Financial Liabilities
• Minimizes Potential Lawsuits
Ethics Training Tips:
• Know that a strong ethics training program can protect your company's reputation and enhance
profits. Employees need to understand what's expected of them.
• Include ethical issues in employee orientation and ongoing ethics training.
• Use real-world scenarios/case studies so that employees are clear about what constitutes acceptable
business practices (and what doesn’t).
• Ensure every employee knows how to react if he or she is faced with a potential violation of the
code or a decision involving an ethical dilemma.
• If employees can’t be certain of confidentiality when reporting a violation or potential violation,
they will be less likely to bring attention to any violations and the company culture will remain
unchanged.
Conclusion
• We need to look beyond ethics codes as a risk-prevention device. We need
to embrace ethics programs as a way to enhance the reputation of the
business. This will contribute to long-term success and be of value to
every stakeholder. It is a badge of honor and, by staying on the offensive,
you will not be an attractive target for business critics.
