Title: “Sustainable Water management- Rainwater Harvesting

systems for Residential Units in Karivellur Region, Kannur”
Abstract:

Water is a finite natural resource that is essential for our survival.

Over the years the reserves of freshwater are running low and some regions in the world are faced with severe
water stress.
Climate change has impacted the pattern and amount of precipitation and the water shortage has escalated with
rapid population growth and urbanization.
As a result, we and the natural environment are confronted with a serious water shortage. Sustainable water
management is a strategy for maintaining future water resources that include increasing water supply and
managing the way we use freshwater to sustain economic growth for current and future generations.
Karivellur panchayath experience severe water scarcity in Kerala even after receiving heavy monsoon rains.
This study aims to discuss the state-of-the-art of managing water supply and demand as a natural resources and
what indicators result in water scarcity to karivellur and what methods to be adopted to tackle water scarcity in
Karivellur Panchayat, Kannur District. Through the study- the technologies like rainwater harvesting that have
been developed to implement sustainable water management at the community scale, is to be demonstrated with
case studies.
Aim:
To study new approaches on Rainwater harvesting systems in

• Study about RWH systems and to identify existing sustainable practises in providing
water to water scare region by RWH systems.
• To examine and analyse the effectiveness of existing practises and to arrive at new
approach that could be applied to karivellur region

waste water management, rain water harvesting etc has to be done
5. Combine inference evolved and arrive at new feasible approaches of sustainable water
management systems from the knowledge acquired from the review study.
