Tolerancing: Basic Guide

The document discusses different aspects of tolerancing, which is specifying acceptable variability in dimensions. It defines terms like nominal size, tolerance, allowance and actual size. It also describes common methods for specifying tolerances, including limit dimensioning using maximum and minimum limits, plus/minus tolerancing using upper and lower deviation bounds, and single limit tolerancing stating just the maximum or minimum value. Angular tolerances are also mentioned as specifying variability in degrees, minutes and seconds.

This is a great problem if you will mate the shaft loosely with a hole/bearing of
1.51” diameter!

We must specify the limits of machining – the tolerance.

Nominal size – Designation for general purpose.
 Expectation - :  Actual- : in fractions.
Expressed commonly

Basic Size or dimension – Size where limits of

sizes are derived by applying tolerances and

allowances.

R-0.75” Tolerance – Total amount on which the given

dimension may vary. In this example 1.508” –
1.50” = 0.008”.
